How to prepare for NEET 2025? This question must be in the minds of NEET aspirants who are aiming to appear for the exam next year. The NEET 2025 exam is expected to be conducted in the first week of May 2025. According to experts and toppers, students should start NEET preparation at least a year or two before the exam. Hence, if you are preparing for NEET 2025, you must have already started studying for the exam. If not, you must not wait any further and begin your NEET 2025 study plan right away. 

NEET or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is the biggest medical entrance exam in India. Over 20 lakh candidates are expected to appear for the exam next year in 13 languages including English and Hindi in over 500 cities across India and abroad. Apart from MBBS and BDS, the other courses that are offered through NEET include Ayurvedic Medicine, Unani Medicine, Siddha Medicine, Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, among others. NEET score is also be utilised for BSc Nursing admission from 2021 onwards. Needless to say, NEET is a highly competitive exam and requires advanced planning and a well-thought-out preparation strategy.

How to Start Preparing for NEET 2025

Before starting the preparation, students should know the pertinent points and factors of NEET 2025 preparation.

Know the NEET Exam Pattern: The first step is to know the NEET exam pattern in detail. NEET is a paper-pencil-based or offline test of three hours duration. As per the pattern, the NEET question paper consists of 200 questions from three sections, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, out of which 180 questions have to be answered. Each subject is divided into two sections, Section A and Section B. These sections carry 35 and 15 questions respectively. Candidates have to attempt 10 out of 15 questions in Section B. Each correct answer carries four marks and for each wrong answer, there would be a negative marking of one mark. While Physics and Chemistry carry 45 questions each, the Biology section, which is further divided into Botany and Zoology, carries the highest weightage, i.e. 90 questions.

Know the NEET Syllabus: After knowing the exam pattern, it is important to know the NEET syllabus in detail. As mentioned earlier, the exam consists of three subjects. Select Right Books and Study Materials: Once you gain familiarity with the NEET pattern and syllabus, it is time to select the NEET study material and books. There is no dearth of NEET preparation books but it is important to select the right ones. You must select the books based on factors like contents, whether those are up to date, edition, language, practice materials, and price, among others. Start Early: It is best to start NEET preparation at the earliest possible, ideally at the end of the Class 10 Board exam. To ensure complete preparation, prepare for two years alongside your Class 11 and Class 12 lessons. In these two years, you will get sufficient time to study the chapters and topics properly to build concepts, practice and revise till the exam.

Decide on Coaching and Other Preparation Channels: Upon deciding to appear for NEET, you should also make another decision, whether you would take coaching guidance or opt for self-study. While it is not impossible to crack NEET without coaching, it gives constant guidance and exposure to the level of competition that is required to crack a highly competitive entrance exam like NEET. You may also decide to self-study in the first year and then opt for coaching in the second year. Apart from joining a coaching institute, you may also join or refer to virtual modes of preparation available across multiple social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Telegram, etc.

Make a Timetable: Preparing for NEET should be made systematically. Since you would also be attending schools and have several other class tests, boards and other competitive entrances to prepare and attend, you should make the most of your NEET preparation by making a timetable and sticking by it so that you do not miss out or lag while preparing for this exam. Hence, prepare a timetable to balance all the aspects to ensure that you do not lose focus on NEET 2025 preparation.

Refer to Previous Year’s Question Papers: Referring to previous years’ NEET question papers give students much-needed exposure to the types of questions they can expect in the exam, as well as the important topics and chapters along with their weightages. Referring to previous years’ NEET question papers serves two purposes. Firstly, it is a great source of practice, secondly, you will get an idea of the question types, topics and weightage. Know Strengths and Weaknesses: After going through the NEET exam pattern and syllabus, you will get an idea of their strengths and weaknesses. In case you are unable to identify it on their own, you can take a diagnostic full-length mock test and see which are their highest and lowest performing sections and then try to find out the root cause. After knowing the strengths and weaknesses, prepare accordingly by giving more time to the weak areas and simultaneously preparing for the strong areas to not lose touch. Sometimes, students tend to make common mistakes that may bring down their scores. Hence, it is important to keep analysing an individual's performance by working on the weaknesses and capitalising on strengths.

Practice: Irrespective of any exam, practice plays a key role in preparation. After completing the basic preparation, you should start practising. Do not spend long hours on practice at the initial stage but start with short practice papers or solve section-wise or topic-wise questions. A step-by-step practice would help them build momentum and after a few months of starting the NEET preparation, you should be able to improve their preparation and take full-length practice tests.
