Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a national-level scholarship programme which aims to encourage students to take up research careers in Science. The programme is conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, ever year. The KVPY application forms 2020 have been released on the official website of KVPY on September 6. All the eligible and interested candidates can fill up the application forms until October 5, 2020. The KVPY exam 2020 is scheduled to take place on January 31, 2021. 

After successfully registering for the KVPY examination 2020, students must go through the KVPY syllabus as well as the exam pattern and start with their preparation as early as possible. As there is no prescribed KVPY syllabus, students need to refer to their NCERT books of classes 11 and 12. They can also refer to the best KVPY books for better preparation for KVPY.

Generally, the KVPY selection process follows a two-round process:

  • Aptitude Test
  • Interview

Aptitude Test

Candidates are evaluated on the reasoning and analytical abilities in KVPY aptitude test. Candidates are required to attempt any three sections in Part I and any two sections of Part II for SB/SX stream only. Candidates meeting the eligibility criteria for various streams will be called for the aptitude test which is conducted both in Hindi and English. The KVPY exam 2020 will be conducted at different centres across the country

Interview

The second round of selection process involves the interview round, wherein the candidate’s knowledge of science and research field is monitored. The shortlisted candidates are allocated a venue of the interview as per the KVPY Test Centre allocated to them.

However, the exam authority has said that it will not be conducting any interviews this year in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak. 

KVPY 2020: Eligibility Criteria

Students must fulfil the following eligibility criteria to be able to apply for the KVPY Fellowship programme:

Stream SA

  • Pursuing Class 11 (Science Subjects) during the academic year 2020-21
  • Minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in Class 10 Board exams
  • Fellowship under this stream will be activated only if they join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (BSc/BS/BStat/BMath/Integrated MSc/Integrated MS) after securing 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects in Class 12
  • During the interim period of one year, they will be invited for the National Science (Vijyoshi) Camp and their travel expenses and local hospitality will be met by KVPY

Stream SB

  • Enrolled in 12th Standard/ (+2) (Science subjects) during the academic year 2020-21
  • They should be aspiring to join undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to BSc/BS/BStat/BMath/Integrated MSc/Integrated MS for the session 2020–21
  • Secure a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in Class 10 and 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in Class 12 exams
  • Students in their 2nd year in Cambridge International Examination Board and aspiring to join a UG programme (viz. BSc/BS/BStat/BMath/Integrated MSc/Integrated MS) in Basic Sciences namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology.
    Such students must fulfil the below-mentioned criteria:
    a) A minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in Class 11
    b) Secured 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in Class 12 Board exams before taking up the fellowship, if awarded

Stream SX
Students enrolled in the 1st year of  undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to BSc/BS/BStat/BMath/Int MS/Int MS during the academic year 2020-21 and securing a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in Class 12 Board exam are eligible to appear for the Aptitude test in 1st year final examination of BSc/BS/BMath/BStat/Int MSc/Int MS they must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

All the students who fulfil the eligibility criteria can apply for the KVPY exam 2020. They must go through the KVPY exam pattern to get an insight into the type of questions asked. They must also practise as many KVPY sample/question papers they can to assess their preparation levels.
