Q:   Does IIST - Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology offer better placements than Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering?

A:

It appears that IIST - Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology has a better placement record than Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering. Here are some key points to consider:

  • IIST has a dedicated Placement Cell that works closely with students to match their interests with appropriate job profiles.
  • All students who have a CGPA above 7.5 are placed at IIST, and the salary package offered is 8 LPA.
  • In 2022, a total of 42 students received placement opportunities at IIST, with the highest CTC of INR 11.5 LPA being offered to the students.
  • IIST has a good placement record every year, with recruiters like Tata Consultancy Services, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Viz Experts, Analog Devices, Mercedes Benz, and others participating in the placement drive.
  • On the other hand, Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering has very few companies visiting for placements, and placements are provided only in ISRO for students who get a 7.5 CGPA. Even then, only the top students are selected if there are more students with a 7.5 CGPA than available vacancies.

Therefore, based on the available information, it can be concluded that IIST offers better placements than Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering.

B.Tech. in Engineering Physics + M.S./ M.Tech. - Batch of 2019
Offered by IIST - Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology
4.2

A great place to learn : IIST
Placements: The placements have been great for previous batches. The B.Tech batches which passed out before 2017 were placed in various ISRO centers if they scored a CGPA above 6.5. The B.Tech batch passing out in 2017 saw students getting placed in various ISRO centers if they scored a CGPA above 7.5. Besides, there were various companies like Viasat, Adobe, Mathworks come to the college for placements. Besides, there is a well-functioning placement cell which always strives to get more and more companies. Students from the college get internships at various ISRO centers as well as various other institutes all over the country as well as abroad. The college also sends 1 third-year student to CalTech for internship each year from each of the B.Tech branches.
Infrastructure: The classrooms are well-furnished with facilities like projectors and speakers. The college has state of the art labs which are well-equipped. The Wi-Fi facility is decent. The library is the best place to be in. It has a wide range of books on each subject and also has a lot of space to sit and study there in peace. The library has 6 floors in all. Besides the campus also has hostels which are an awesome place to live. The hostels are clean and proper. The mess food is hygienic, and the taste and quality vary over time (sometimes very good and sometimes average). The mess food includes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food in the menu. The sports facilities are average. There is a basketball court and a volleyball court on the campus. Besides, there are facilities for table-tennis and badminton in the buildings. There is a football court which is a few kilometres away from the campus. Besides, there are facilities for carrom, pool and chess also. The cafeteria on the campus is decent and serves a variety of food and drinks. Also, it has a store where you can buy basic necessities.
Faculty: The faculty team is great. All the departments have professors who are highly qualified and knowledgeable. The teaching and the classes are a great learning experience. The methods of teaching include teaching on the board, via presentations and also via some small experiments in class. The curriculum is on par with that of any other leading colleges in the country. Depending on the subject you study, the industry exposure varies. Mostly students are taken to the various ISRO centers to see how things function there. The student-faculty ratio varies from programme to programme.
Other: The college is located far from the city. But is well-connected to the city via state buses. There are not many eateries around the campus, just a few small shops. The campus is beautiful and green. The campus is in a development stage and is improving day by day. Besides, there are a lot of tourist places around where students can go and chill.

The infrastructure and facilities are good, but the sports facilities are average.
Placements: IIST is not so popular as much, but it is one of the prestigious institutes of Indian Space Research Organization and recently, celebrated its tenth anniversary. About the placements cell as far my branch, i.e., the physical sciences, it is also the last batch, our placements are nearly 70% from the year 2017 including government and non-government jobs. Previously, the students who completed their b.tech in IIST with par CGPA had been into ISRO. In feature there are high chances of it will change, IIST also started placements from other private companies, but it is not up to mark for our batch.
Infrastructure: IIST has the best infrastructure compared to the other engineering colleges. We can't get the better hostel and here the library is the landmark. As all the other blocks of the college are completed by now, I think we can give up to 95 out of 100 for the infrastructure in IIST.
Faculty: The faculty are well-experienced, and some of them are ISRO scientists too. The course curriculum is good, and it will get modified every year. The faculty are helpful and clear the doubts whenever we approach. Nowadays IIST changing to digital classrooms, we can get internships offered from all the ISRO centres and the other organisations.

Don't expect any placement unless among toppers. Faculty members are good.
Placements: My senior batch had a bond with ISRO, that every student above a CGPA of 6.5 will get placed. So, 90% of them got placed in ISRO centres. But from 2013 batch (my batch) onwards, they proposed a new bond where a student has to have a CGPA above 7.5 and conditioned to vacancies offered by ISRO, students will be placed. My course name is physical sciences (which was not listed above, so I had to choose anything), and 2013 batch is the last one with that course. There are 34 students in my batch and ISRO is offering jobs to only 9 students. And no other student has been placed in any private firm till now. Placement at IIST is the worst if you are not among the toppers. Not many companies visit IIST. I would highly recommend to not study in IIST if you depend on institute placement. But if you have the confidence of securing above 7.5 GPA every semester, it's a good deal to study from IIST, as you are exempted from paying any fee.
Infrastructure: Wi-Fi facility for B.Tech fourth year students is from 10:00 hrs to 1:00 hrs on weekdays and 6:00 hrs to 2:00 hrs on weekends. For other B.Tech students, it is different. From first to third-year B.Tech it is 6:00 to 8:00 hrs, then 14:00 to 1:00 hrs on weekdays and similar to fourth years on weekends. Classrooms are well equipped, some of them don't have installed projectors but they use external devices. The library is good enough. It has a lot of relevant books, but night-study in the library is not allowed, as it shuts down at 21:00 hrs usually and 22:30 hrs during exams. They also offer a night book issuing facility, have several e-books, journals, magazines. Medical facilities are free of cost and really good. There is one doctor on campus and a few basic facilities. You can also visit a specialist to the hospital which the institute has some pact with, that too free of cost check-up, medicines etc. Sports facilities are not so good. No swimming, tennis, football court etc. But we have badminton, table tennis, basketball, pool and gym. No gym in girls' hostel. Labs are satisfactory. Since the institute is new, labs are not very developed ones. Hostel rooms are hygienic and good to stay. Infrastructure is still not complete, there is no proper road from hostel to physics building (D2). Roads and buildings are under construction. Institute mess provides food, which is hygienic but not so good in taste. The canteen facility is not so good, it offers only fried rice. There is only one shop on campus to buy your daily necessities. Since the institute is around 30 km from Trivandrum, there is a lack of lots of facilities and services. Also, going to the city is a big deal, though they provide vehicles at specific times. No encouragement for cultural activities like dancing and singing. They don't even have a proper dance practicing room.
Faculty: Faculty for physics, astronomy, geology, atmospheric, remote sensing and mathematics is good. Basically, for physical sciences, all the faculty members are good and some of them are great. Some of them are helpful, qualified and extremely knowledgeable. All the associate professors are amazing. No there was not industry exposure as such, but we had a visit to VSSC(Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre) once. The curriculum for Physical Science focusses on all the fields I had mentioned above. So we are a jack of all trades, but master of none, when compared to engineering physics offered by IITs and IIST now. But I find the curriculum useful since now I have some idea of all the fields, I can be sure about which field I want to make my career in. Engineering physics which is now offered by IIST with M.S is a really helpful course and is more focused on physics.
Other: Infrastructure in terms of roads is extremely poor. Location of the institute is not very good as it is really far from the city. If I ever get a chance to decide which college I should choose, I will never take IIST. Faculty, labs and other services are good, but placement is a really big issue. They need to reduce the strength of institute if they can't place the students in ISRO, which was the motive of formation of this college.
