Q:   Can I join IMUC directly?

A:

No, you cannot join IMUC directly. To qualify for admission to the university, you must pass the IMUC entrance exam. Every year in May or June, the IMUC entrance exam is held. A:

IMU Chennai - Is it good for UG Diploma?

Here's what past students and alumni have to say:

* Good Infrastructure: Well-maintained campuses with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, libraries, digital classrooms, swimming pools, sports grounds, and comfortable hostels with a sea-facing view.
* Experienced Faculty: Professors who have extensive sailing experience (15+ years) providing both theoretical and practical knowledge. Teaching methods are admired, making students industry-ready.
* Placement Opportunities: Although there may be some limitations, most students have reported getting placed or sponsored by top companies like Fleet Management, Synergy, Torm, and Home.
* Course Curriculum: Relevant and industry-focused, preparing students for careers in the merchant navy.
* Campus Life: A vibrant atmosphere with extracurricular activities, sports, and festivals.

However, there are some areas for improvement:

* Food Quality: Some students found the food to be subpar.
* Limited Placement Opportunities for Boys: Unfortunately, the college focuses more on placing girl students, leaving boy students without opportunities.

Overall, IMU Chennai seems to be a good option for those interested in pursuing a UG Diploma in the merchant navy field, considering its strong infrastructure, experienced faculty, and decent placement opportunities. However, students should weigh the pros and cons carefully, particularly regarding limited placement opportunities for male students.

Great college for merchant navy with 100% placement and the best teachers.
Placements: There was 100% placement in our course. Basic package of around 500 USD/mo was offered to all. Fleet management ltd, MOL shipping, Synergy were some of the top recruiters.
Infrastructure: College infrastructure was quite impressive, with high quality food, medical facilities and sports equipments. Digital classrooms, updated library, well maintained computer lab and laboratories for practicals made the learning experience easy and fun. Hygienic food and proper medical assistance at all times ensured good health.
Faculty: It is one of the best colleges for Merchant navy and it maintains it's standards with the best teachers, curriculum and assessments which help in growth of the cadets. IMU ensures all cadets under IMU are well trained to be proficient enough to do the best and make India proud of their seafarers. Both practical and theory exams are conducted here which makes sure that the cadet is ready to work at sea.
Other: Anyone aiming for merchant navy in India shall go for this course and so did I. A little leniency as per the modern times could have been better, but overall my college experience was good.

Good placements if you don't have any arrears in end semester, good infrastructure and faculty.
Placements: 90% of students were placed in my course. The highest package offered for a deck cadet is 60000 and the lowest package is 20000. Top recruiting companies - M.Sc. Maersk, Fleet management, Synergy, etc. Top roles offered in our course is Deck Cadet, Third engineer .
Infrastructure: Wi-Fi is available inside the campus, labs are top class. Classrooms are well-equipped, library has every needed books that are related to this course. Hostel is well maintained by the staffs, there is campus clinic with a doctor and 2 nurses. The quality of food provided is average, sports and games equipment are provided here .
Faculty: Teachers are helpful and well qualified for this and knowledgeable and the teaching quality is very good. This course curriculum is relevant and it makes students industry ready. Semester exams are bit difficult. Pass percentage is 50%. They give every training needed.

I am absolutely dissatisfied because of faculty members.
Placements: Around 50% of students got placed. Many companies give importance to girl cadets, and they got placed in the starting of their final year. Many of them cleared Synergy exams. Our college cadets have a good preference at Synergy. Companies like TORM, MSI, MMSI, and FLEET are the recruiters.
Infrastructure: Our campus has a good library. Classrooms are well-equipped with air-conditioning, but it may not work. Wi-Fi connection works have started, and it may be available soon. There is a clinic inside the campus. There are 2 hostels. BoB is the old one, and Marine hostel is new one with elevators.
Faculty: Some teachers are good, especially Physics ma'am and other permanent faculty members. The college mainly hires guest faculty members due to shortage. The teaching quality varies with person. In our course, the toughest subject is mathematics in 2nd-semester. Students should study hard to pass. The difficulty level of exams is average. The pass marks in theory exams are 35 out of 70 marks.
Other: Our campus is on the east coast road and got a PVR Cinehouse opposite the college. Students have to travel 1 hour from Chennai railway station and airport. This campus is not over-crowded because B.Tech students will be in the IMU headquarters.

Review of IMU Chennai Indian Maritime University (IMUC).
Placements: The placements are provided by the college. Due to the pandemic, I don't know how many students got placed, but people were placed with an average package of around 25,000-35,000 per month. Due to the pandemic, the placements were affected. Students who are good at academics with no backlogs can get placed.
Infrastructure: The campus is spacious and has good infrastructure. We have well-developed labs, well-equipped classrooms and a library. The hostel is big and clean, and we have a sports ground for volleyball, football etc. A gym and swimming pool are also there for physical fitness.
Faculty: The faculty members are experienced and trained to mentor and teach in the right way. Semester exams are quite tough, but if prepared and practised thoroughly, it will be easy. The course curriculum is 95% relevant and used in the industry. It makes students industry-ready.
Other: We have NCC and other training facilities.

Review of IMU Chennai Indian Maritime University (IMUC).
Placements: Many good companies visited last year. All were MNCs that offered a basic salary package of 400-500 dollars per annum. From our 3rd year, out of 95 students, almost everyone got placed, i.e., 85% of the students got placed. After completing the course, many students with arrears too got placed in a good company.
Infrastructure: The college has a campus size of 35 acres on area, and it has a gym, playground individually for cricket, football and hockey. It also has four different hostels for cadets with Wi-Fi access 24x7. It also has a badminton court, tennis court, basketball court, volleyball court and a parade ground. It also has an Olympic size swimming pool. It has a workshop, which is the biggest workshop in Asia. It has a library with almost 35,000 books. It has several simulation labs and other labs like an electrical lab, mechanical lab, the engine lab, a park, a temple, a masjid, along with a conference room and an auditorium with almost 1,000 seating capacity. It is a 4-year residential program. There are four separate hostels for each batch of the college, and it is a Wi-Fi campus. The hostel is divided into 10 different wings. Each wing has 3-4 rooms, and 25 cadets live in it together. Rooms are properly ventilated, and in each room, 6 cadets live together. There are four fans in each room with 4 windows, and they are good with 4 fluorescent tubes. It also has a study room, an upper and lower reck, a kit room, a TV room, a hostel mess, a visitor room, a sports kit room and a quadrangle.
Faculty: Faculty members are good.
Other: The college hosts several competitions like Tempest, Estuary and Lithosphere. Along with that, there are several co-curricular competitions that are held from time to time and under the direction of the government. Tempest is one of the largest Marine fests in India, with a foot count of almost 20,000. It also hosts Kolkata Got Talent and Femina College Princesses during the college fest. Events keep on happening depending upon the direction of the government. The college also hosts a MUN, i.e., Model United Nations Conference, every year at the college auditorium. It also has a sports week which includes a cricket championship, a football championship, a volleyball cup, a basketball cup, a hockey championship and several other championships related to tennis, badminton, chess and carrom. The college offers scholarships to meritorious students, and the college topper is awarded 1 lac each semester. The next 30 rankers are awarded Rs. 75,000, and the next 30 rankers are awarded a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 each semester.

Q:   Is IMU Chennai good for B.E. / B.Tech?

A:
{Source: B.E. / B.Tech students & alumni}

IMU Chennai for B.E./B.Tech

Based on the reviews and feedback from students and alumni, here's an assessment of IMU Chennai for its B.E./B.Tech program:

Faculty
* Mixed opinions on the faculty, with some students finding them unhelpful and others appreciating their knowledge and guidance
* Not all faculty members have a strong background in their respective fields (according to some reviewers)

Infrastructure
* Average infrastructure, with some amenities lacking (e.g., Wi-Fi in hostels)
* Limited sports facilities, and no swimming pool despite being a part of the marine engineering course
* Good classrooms and libraries

Placement
* High placement rate (around 85%) with major companies visiting the campus
* Salaries range from INR35,000 to INR50,000 per month initially, increasing up to INR7 Lacs per month with experience and promotion
* Opportunities for internships at different ports

Curriculum
* Relevant and industry-ready course structure, making students employable
* Complex curriculum, however, might require extra effort from students

Overall Experience
* Mixed feelings about the college, with some students enjoying the academic environment and others experiencing difficulties with certain faculty members or infrastructure limitations

In summary, while IMU Chennai seems to offer a decent educational experience and relatively good placement opportunities, some concerns arise regarding the faculty and infrastructure. Students seeking a strong foundation in marine engineering and a supportive learning environment may find IMU Chennai suitable, but those expecting exceptional faculty guidance or state-of-the-art infrastructure might consider other options carefully.
