Acids can be described as compounds that donate another compound to a hydrogen ion (H+) (usually called a base). Commonly, an acid used to be defined as a chemical compound that creates a solution once immersed in water that has a low hydrogen ion activity in its purest form than water. 

An alkali, on the other hand, is considered a base that is soluble in nature. Salts are formed by liquids that are volatile (acids) until combined with certain substances. Usually, acids are H+ donors, while bases are H+ acceptors.
