A weak base is a base that does not completely dissociate when dissolved in water. The resulting aqueous solution contains only a small proportion of hydroxide ions and the radical base concerned and a large proportion of the base's undissociated molecules. The ionisation of a weak base is usually a type of equilibrium process in which a chemical equilibrium between the concentration of the undissociated base and its constituent ions is established inside the solution.

Like weak acids, weak bases, especially because of their role in buffer solutions, have important applications in biochemical studies, chemical reactions, and physiological purposes. Weak bases, such as the formation of enolates, can also be used to catalyse certain reactions.

Examples of Weak Base

  • Pyridine (C5H5N)

Pyridine has the molecular formula C5H5N and is an organic compound. This chemical compound is a weak base with a heterocyclic structure. The pyridine composition is similar to that of benzene, except that a single atom of nitrogen is substituted by one of the methine groups. 

  • Ammonia (NH3)

With the formula NH3, ammonia is a chemical compound. It is a poor basis that, under normal temperature and pressure pressures, it persists as a colourless gas. It is understood that this gas is distinguished by its pungent smell. The resulting solution contains the ammonium cation (denoted by the chemical formula NH4+ and the hydroxide anion) when ammonia is dissolved in water.

  • Trimethylamine (N(CH3)3)

A weak base with the chemical formula N(CH3)3 is trimethylamine, also abbreviated to TMA. In the presence of a catalyst, this compound can be prepared by combining ammonia with methanol.
