Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   Can I join a B.Sc course at IIT Madras without giving JEE?

A:

IIT Madras BSc admission is entrance-based as the institute primarily accepts the rank and scores of the JEE Main examination for admission to its full-time BSc programme. However, if candidates wish to apply for the integrated BS plus MS programme, then they can apply for admission through the scores of the IISER Aptitude Test. Therefore, you can join the BSc course at IIT Madras without giving the JEE.

Q:   How can I get admission in IIT Madras?

A:

To seek admission to the BTech programme offered at IIT Madras, candidates need to visit the official website of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and fill out the application form in online mode for JEE Main. For other courses such as MSc, MTech, BS-MS (Dual Degree) etc., candidates must visit the official website of respective national-level entrance exam conducting bodies and fill out the application form in online mode. IIT Madras admission to most of the courses is entrance-based. For detailed information around IIT Madras course admission, click here.

Q:   Can we join IIT Madras without JEE?

A:

Yes, there are many other courses for which the selection criteria are different and the prescribed entrance exam is also other than JEE-Main and JEE-Advanced. Below are some of the courses offered at IIT Madras along with their eligibility criteria and entrance exam:

  • MTech: IIT Madras offers a two-year full-time M.Tech programme across various specialisations. The institute inducts candidates for the M.Tech programmes based on valid GATE scores followed by the counselling process.
  • MBA: For admission to the full-time two year MBA programme at IIT Madras, candidates are required to appear for the CAT exam. Candidates based on their CAT scores will be shortlisted for the Group Discussion & Personal Interview (PI) round.
  • MSc: IIT Madras accepts admission to the MSc programme based on a valid score/ rank in the IIT-JAM exam.

Q:   Can I get admission to IIT Madras with a low JEE rank?

A:
Admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is highly competitive and the admission process is based on the candidate's JEE Advanced rank. However, admission to IIT Madras or any other IIT with a low JEE rank is unlikely, as the cutoff for admission is generally very high. That being said, it's important to remember that JEE rank is not the only factor that IITs consider during the admission process. Other factors such as academic performance, extracurricular activities, and achievements in related fields may also be taken into account. Additionally, some IITs offer other admission channels like the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme, which allows foreign nationals to apply for admission to IITs based on their SAT scores. It's always best to check the official IIT Madras website for the most up-to-date information on their admission process, eligibility criteria, and other requirements.

Q:   What is eligibility for BSc from IIT Madras?

A:

Candidates seeking admission to the BSc programme offered at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras are required to meet the IIT Madras BSc eligibility criteria. Candidates who have passed the Class 12 or equivalent examination with a minimum of 75% aggregate from a recognised Board can apply for admission to the BSc programme.

IIT Madras - Indian Institute of Technology is a great college.
Placements: On average, more than 80% of the people get placed every year. In biotechnology which includes bioengineering and biological sciences 5 years both. Every year there are more than 80 students in a batch and there are 40 students in each branch. So the placements are quite good and a lot of students opted for non-core placements because in reality chore placements in biotechnology in India are not good but in IIT Madras lots of students irrespective of branch gain good packages mostly in non-core. In biotechnology in IIT Madras around 40 students sit for placements every year but data is changing every year, so around 36 students got placed with a minimum of 5 LPA and the highest salary package offered is around 35 LPA - 40 LPA. The average salary package offered was between 12 LPA to 15 LPA, and the average salary package offered was around 11 LPA to 13 LPA which is equivalent to other branches also like civil and chemical and also growing much faster than other branches except CS. Even for biological sciences, students have both options one is for higher studies abroad or in India and the other is company placements. Biosciences people and bioengineering people are treated the same in all scenarios including placements.
Infrastructure: All the facilities are good. IIT Madras is one of the premium institutes of India and it gives you all freedom you want. A lot of hostels both for boys and girls Mandakini, Kaveri, Bhadra, etc., are available with all the facilities including good Wi-Fi. Washing machines are available for all hostels, and toilets are cleaned every day. The most important is the greenery around the hostel with fresh air. Hostel rooms of the new hostel Mandakini are very good with all facilities with the very clean area and are good for all freshers. Classrooms are also good, and we have a library with huge collection of books, and labs are excellent biotechnology lab, food served is good depends from person to person but the food is fine and I like it. Canteen is also available inside the mess, and all sports facilities are provided. You have a chance to shine your game with all the sports facilities you want. I give 4.5 /5 to the overall infrastructure. You never regret of joining IIT Madras over other IIT Bombay and Delhi.
Faculty: Faculty members here are excellent with a lot of qualifications. it depends upon students how they take their professors. Now IITM introduce a trimester system so you can meet exams every 15 days, which I feel a little bad because of the less time for other activities but it also reduces the burden of the end semester at the last of the semester. Teachers are very helpful, and they solve every doubt that students ask and are very friendly. This course is very good and you can enjoy this course and also take interest in what the teachers is teaching which usually does not happen in other departments. You have more time left after your studies for other activities you want to do. So it has very enjoyable subjects with very friendly teachers.
Other: Most students chose this course because of their low rank in JEE and uncomfort. But these peoples after joining 2 - 3 month start admiring this course and this course deserve it. Mainly this course includes a study of DNA, cells, immunology, and many more interesting topics different from that MBBS bio. Not much difference in biological sciences and bioengineering courses. Some courses are different for both branches. But at last, most of the class sit for placements including both students biological sciences and bioengineering students, and placed with good package mainly greater than 11 LPA in most cases. Year to year popularity of this branch increasing and also cutoff. So this branch graves a great future with lots of research opportunities. You may become a professor, you can also work in any company, and any research lab as a scientist. There is no company pressure. You also prepare for civil services exams. So it has a lot of opportunities. Not only in IIT Madras but also in all old IITs.

A great institute with really good infrastructure and facilities.
Placements: The placement rate of IIT Madras is really good. During the first phase of placements in December, almost 900 students got placement offers from 200 companies. There is an active placement cell too which keeps on organising funda sessions for students regularly.
Infrastructure: Facilities provided by the college are really good. The labs are equipped with modern instruments. The entire campus is enabled with a high-speed LAN connection. Medical insurance is provided up to 1 lakh to every student. The central library is one of the biggest libraries in India.
Faculty: Professors in the college are highly knowledgeable, and they know the concepts well. The faculty to student ratio is very good when compared to other IITs. The faculty to student ratio is 1:13 in the physics department which is quite good. TAs are also very helpful and supportive. Overall, faculty members and teaching methods are top class.
Other: The cultural fest Saarang and technical fest Shastra are a great experience.

There are many people who go abroad to complete their further studies. They could be researchers, teaching assistants, or workers. They could be researchers, teaching assistants, or workers.
Infrastructure: If you are in NIRF 1, please enjoy this journey. It is the best. The best is in terms of infrastructure, in terms of life, in terms of students, in terms of posts, in terms of hospitals, and whatever you guys need. This place is very beautiful.
Faculty: The faculty members are very supportive. Teachers, teaching assistants, lab teachers, lab assistants, faculty advisors, student advisors, they are the best. All the courses, subjects, labs, and activities are equally valuable for the branches you are in. It'll depend on the amount of concentration and effort. The average passing percentage is 40%.

IIT Madras is a supreme institution.
Placements: Placements are increasing in the biotech field in our institution. Moreover, students who are more interested in other fields like data science, etc., also got placed in other tech companies through a biotech background. Placements are always available for students. Whatever job profile they want, they can easily get with their skills.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure of our college is old, but it is fairly managed. New hostels are under construction and might be ready by next year. All the facilities are available in hostels, and you will find ground for every game in the hostel. The hostel has a tech room, common room for newspapers and music room which is equipped with various instruments. There is a television for entertainment, and the hostel is further updating more every year by the student body who coordinate through hostel department and elected by the hostel students only.
Faculty: Professors here are top-class and always helpful. They are delighted to help the students throughout their tenure in the institute. Many professors are very concerned about the students, and they regularly check the students. They conduct informal sessions regarding research work, which is very good.
Other: Lots of events, fests and guest lectures are organised around the year for students who are very much interested, whether it is related to academics or sports or arts or cultural. Everything is possible when you study at IIT.

    Our college has been wonderful.
Placements: A lot of students were placed but many among them belonged to non-core, few went for higher studies abroad and a few sat for core placements. The highest salary offered is 40 LPA and the least is 8 LPA. According to the department’s rule, every student must do one core internship. Majority of the students were interested in becoming professors in famous institutions.
Infrastructure: The environment is good for research and we got a great infrastructure. The classrooms are not air-conditioned and that was to save the ecofriendly environment. We have department computational facility where anyone can study. Apart from that, we have a central library.
Faculty: Professors are highly qualified. They fail to teach the students but expect us to answer hard question papers. The students need to learn a lot on their own that is what professors think as the perfect learning. This course makes people go more into research.
Other: I was very interested in core initially.
