Q:   What are passing marks in GATE exam?

A:

Passing marks in GATE exam is different for all 30 papers. The GATE qualifying mark for PSUs recruitment is also different. Candidates appearing in any GATE paper have to obtain the minimum mark in order to be declared qualified for the exam. Only qualified candidates are considered for admission to MTech/MSc/PhD programs and the MHRD scholarship. Candidates can check previous year GATE cutoff for various papers on the Shiksha page or from the GATE official website.

Q:   Has the GATE 2025 exam pattern changed from previous years?

A:

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering has come a long way since its inception. The entrance test was first introduced in 1983 and was conducted offline (in pen and paper format) only for engineering and science streams. However, over the years, the pattern of the GATE examination has changed in several factors, such as the following -

  • Giving more emphasis on numerical ability and reasoning questions.

  • More case-based questions are included to understand the candidate’s ability and approach towards practical knowledge.

  • Changing the exam mode from offline to a computer-based test for faster evaluation, improved accuracy, and a more secure examination process.

  • Introducing more elaborated syllabi and disciplines to align with the industry demands and technological advancements.

Overall, the GATE has grown beyond being a gateway for postgraduate studies. It is now a recognised criterion for recruitment in over 50 PSUs, such as ONGC, IOCL, and NTPC. Candidate can check GATE exam pattern here: GATE 2025 Exam Pattern

Q:   Is it necessary for a candidate to attempt all questions in GATE?

A:

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is a national-level examination conducted for Master of Engineering (ME), Masters in Technology (M.Tech), and direct Ph.D. admissions to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other institutes/universities across India.

The GATE paper consists of a total of 65 questions. Check below for the GATE exam pattern. - The GATE Questions paper consists of two sections, namely General Aptitude (GA) (15 marks) and the subject-specific GATE paper (85 marks). - The General Aptitude (GA) section consists of 10 questions. 1 to 5 questions are worth 1 mark each, and the rest, 6 to 10, are worth 2 marks each. - The GATE paper subject-specific section consists of 55 questions, of which 1 to 25 are of 1 mark each and questions from 26 to 55 are of 2 marks each. - Here to be noted that, questions that are not attempted will result in zero marks. Therefore, wrong answers to multiple-choice questions (MCQs) will result in negative marking. For questions of the numerical answer type, there is no negative marking. Also, for MCQ questions, a wrong answer will result in a deduction of 1/3 mark for a 1-mark question and 2/3 mark for a 2-mark question. GATE 2025 Exam Pattern: Two Paper Combination

The GATE 2025 two-paper concept allows candidates to select two subjects instead of one. Candidates must choose two subjects from the list of combinations approved by the GATE authorities. The conducting body has introduced a new GATE two-paper combination list for registered candidates. Candidates can check the new list below. Opting for two-paper combinations in GATE enhances students' skills and knowledge, improving their chances of acceptance into engineering. The primary paper in the GATE 2025 second paper is related to the candidate’s undergraduate discipline. On the other hand, the secondary paper allows the candidate to apply their knowledge in the related field. Candidates must choose both subjects from the allowed subject combination in the GATE 2025 exam admission

GATE 2025 Exam Pattern: Type of Questions

GATE exam has 65 questions for 100 marks. Three types of questions are asked in the GATE exam: MCQs, MSQs & NAT. Candidate must check question types with respective marking scheme given below:

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

  • Questions will have 1 or 2 marks in all the GATE question papers.
  • Each MCQ will have four options.
  • Negative marking of 1/3 of the allotted marks will be applicable for MCQs.

Multiple Select Questions (MSQs)

  • Questions will have 1 or 2 marks in all the GATE question papers.
  • There will be four options for each MSQ.
  • There will be no negative markings for MSQs.
  • Marks will be given on a proportional correctness basis with respect to other options.

Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions

  • NAT Questions will carry either 1 or 2 marks in all the GATE question papers.
  • There will be no options for each NAT Question.
  • Candidates must write the answer found in terms of real numbers using the virtual keyboard provided during the GATE exam.
  • There will be no negative marking for NAT questions in the GATE exam.

Category of questions

Candidates must know that the GATE 2025 exam question paper will be designed to evaluate the capabilities of candidates through a diverse range of assessment criteria. Candidates can check the detailed assessment criteria below:

  • Recall: These questions are based on facts, principles, formulae, or laws of the discipline. The candidate is expected to obtain the answer from the subject's memory or, at most, from a short computation.
  • Comprehension: These questions test the candidate’s understanding of the basic concepts and require the candidate to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas.
  • Application: These questions test the candidate’s applicability of knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning
  • Analysis and Synthesis: Analytical questions test the candidate’s applicability to analyse given data with images, diagrams, graphs, etc. to produce the answer.  A Synthesis question might require the candidate to compare two or more pieces of information. Questions in this category could, for example, involve the candidate recognising unstated assumptions or separating useful information from irrelevant information.

Q:   Are Engineering Mathematics questions asked in every GATE paper?

A:

No, questions based on Engineering Mathematics are not asked in every GATE paper.

Question papers with the codes AR, CY, EY, GG, M.A. PH, and XL do not consist of Engineering Mathematics questions. Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude are the compulsory sections, which include 28% weightage combined in each in total marks in GATE papers with codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS EC, EE, IN ME, MN, MT, PE, PI TF, and XE.

Q:   Which section is allotted the highest marks in GATE 2025?

A:

GATE examination is conducted across India. It tests the comprehensive understanding of several undergraduate subjects in engineering and Science for admission into the Masters programme and a job in Public Sector Companies. It is important to note that with 70% of the total marks, the technical section holds the highest number of marks in any subjects question paper. Scroll down to know the weightage of the General Aptitude (GA) and Engineering Mathematics in GATE 2025. In GATE 2025, GA and Engineering Mathematics will be compulsory sections, which consist of 15% weightage each in total marks in GATE papers with codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS EC, EE, IN ME, MN, MT, PE, PI TF, and XE. The remaining 70% weightage will be provided to the subject selected by the candidate. In GATE 2025 question papers of AR, CY, EY, GG, M.A. PH, ST, and XL, a compulsory section of General Aptitude will be there for 15% of the total marks. The remaining 85% weightage will be provided to the selected subject. Read More in detail: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-pattern.
