Q:   Which college is better for B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering: IIT Delhi or IIT Bombay?

A:

The course outline of mechanical in IIT Delhi or IIT Bombay is similar and is quite well aligned with the course structure of top ranked international universities and the mechanical is one of the most desired and demanded branches in the IITs. The universities stand on similar QS ranking level and the facility and quality of infrastructure on average is almost the same in both the campuses, IITB has a lake, a pretty larger campus than that of IITD whereas IITD stands in a very desired location of Delhi ( in Hauz Khas) which stands very close to the international airport and various railway stations and is comparatively very green and clean than the outer Delhi. The trends of placement or students going for further studies differ very less and if you are really relying on placements to be a deciding factor, you'll still be in doubt. If we look at the opening and closing ranks of the department in both the colleges, the mechanical in IITB opens before it starts at IITD and also closes some numbers before, but the range is quite same. Many people choose IITB for its past trend or some local variables and similarly people also choose IITD if they aspire to go for civil services as Delhi is the hub for the preparation for UPSC and other civil services and again the accessibility of the nearby regions. I'd say both of the campus stand on the same level if the department is considered, the selection is totally depend on the individual depending on the local variables that affects him/her.

Life of a student at IIT Bombay.
Placements: Around 80 to 85 percent of the students in our course department get placed on campus every year. The rest choose higher education. Top recruiters were Boeing, Airbus, HAL, and a few automobile companies like BMW and TATA. Mainly offered roles were lead engineer, production engineer, chief designer, and many more.
Infrastructure: There are separate department buildings. There's a Wi-Fi connection all over the campus which runs with full speed. World-class lab facilities, air-conditioned classrooms, and labs. A huge library building has millions of books, research papers, journals, etc. Hostels are well-maintained, and proper cleaning happens every day by respective staff. The mess has good food. A multi-specialty hospital within the campus provides treatment. A big gymkhana ground with multiple indoor stadiums for volleyball, basketball, Kho-Kho, and badminton. Huge hockey court and football court. An athletic-level swimming pool too.
Faculty: Teachers are well-educated and qualified professionals with various research published under their name and the best teaching experience. Course curriculums are well-planned for the overall development of the students. Semester examinations are often made difficult to make the students learn from their mistakes, thus giving an opportunity to succeed better in life's problems.
Other: This course has been my dream course since the start of my preparation for exams. Every moment is the best thing at this college, especially the campus life. Multiple events like Techfest and Mood Indigo, the institute's cultural fest, are both known as Asia's largest college fests. Huge crowds, a green environment, and good scholarship facilities are provided by the institution.

The college has beautiful infrastructure and excellent placements.
Placements: IIT Bombay is mainly known for its placement records. Last year, students received offers from international countries like Japan, UAE, Singapore, and Taiwan. The average package of the 2023 batch is around 23 LPA, and the highest package is 3.5 crores per year. The placement percentage is nearly 75%. Students can apply for internships in the third-year summer, and last year, more than 400 students got internships in core companies, and 700+ students got internships in non-core companies.
Infrastructure: The college has its own big ground and a beautiful campus. Classrooms are equipped with digital gadgets like projectors and smart boards. The best thing about our college is the hostel because it provides students with all the facilities, such as cleaned rooms, cleaned washrooms, and high-speed internet. The hostel mess food is also good. Girls and boys have separate hostels with privacy and safety.
Faculty: The faculty of our college is excellent. All the faculty members are experienced. Their method of teaching depends on concepts and particular topics, and they teach us using digital boards and presentations. In my experience, the teachers here are very good, and they help us in every situation where we get stuck. Exams are taken by the college on a semester basis, and they are easy if you prepare with the study material provided by the faculty.

Take the course, only if you like it.
Placements: 80% of students were placed in this course. The highest might be 24 lpa, and the lowest around 12–13 lpa. The top recruiting company for this course is HUL. Around 50% get internships in random companies and just 1 or 2 in HUL. The top roles are R&D, research fellowships, etc.
Infrastructure: There are classrooms, Wi-Fi, labs, and canteens. The department building seems quite old and the infrastructure is a bit outdated; otherwise, it is good. The boys hostels are not good with poor infrastructure and limited space but the newer ones are better. Food quality degrades as the days pass.
Faculty: Personally, I don't like chemical core, but some professors are really helpful. The course curriculum is okay and the department council is trying a lot to make the students industry-ready. Exams are tough, at least for me. The grading is absolutely absurd.
Other: I wanted IITB so I went with chemicals. I don't like anything about this course. I wish the pros stopped the harsh grading. I would have been happier if I was in a different course, maybe. Events and festivals are really fun. Crowds and seniors are really helpful in every aspect.

As a summary, my college is the best in all aspects, and students love college environment as well.
Placements: Placements are available for students in the seventh semester. The college has a placement team which works so hard for students, and they bring lots of companies to the campus. Last year, around 500 companies visited the campus, and more than 1400 students got placed. The average package offered at IIT Bombay is 23 LPA. From my department, Computer Science, around 307 students have been offered IT/Software jobs by more than 84 companies.
Infrastructure: The campus is amazing, and the size of the campus is huge. Students from various states come to study in the college, and so the college environment is also very nice. The classrooms are large and can accommodate more than 70-80 students per classroom. The classrooms have fans and are air-conditioned as well. The college has a total of 17 hostels, which have both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The mess food quality depends upon the hostel; in my hostel, it is good. Overall, we can say the infrastructure and facilities in the college are great.
Faculty: Faculty members are good. They support those students who do the work sincerely and also help in getting research papers published on different sites. We can approach them through mail or go to their cabins. Although there might be difficulties for them to teach so many students, they keep helping and solving our doubts. For exams, notes are enough, and the faculty provides us with PYQs, which are helpful for studies.

IIT Bombay provided good placements for many years. It has good infrastructure.
Placements: The placement cell at IIT Bombay is pretty good. In 2023, around 90% of students got placed in the summer campus drive. The average salary package offered is 57 LPA. The highest salary package offered is 1 CPA. The remaining students decided to pursue higher studies or explore more opportunities. Training programs by the TNP cell are good enough for placements.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is overall great. There are dedicated academic blocks for each department. The institute provides all the basic needs like high-speed internet, sports facilities, a gym, etc. The college canteen is well-cleaned. The canteen provides hygienic food. Hostel facilities are good. Each room has all basic facilities like a bed, fan, light, and table.
Faculty: Here at IIT Bombay, we have 30-40 teachers and professors. They all are highly qualified. They are Ph.D. holders. Scholars are respected in their fields. They help us with projects and enhance our skill set. The teaching is really good but they give a lot of study and project work. Passing exams is not easy. Hard work is needed.
