Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   Is SRM University good for B.Tech?

A:

Here are some positive and negative points of SRM University:

Positive:

  1. Located in Chennai which is a metropolitan city. Three out of five campuses are located in Chennai
  2. You can have a lot of fun
  3. In KTR, there are a lot of opportunities provided to students to develop their profile like hundreds of clubs, teams like robocon, conrods, camber, and 4ze where students can build their own bots, cars and stuff. If you are really interested in your field then you can do anything in SRM
  4. Canteen facilities are excellent
  5. As far as placements are concerned, most students are placed in IT sector. Core companies also visit the campus but they select only one or two students. In a batch of 500600 students i.e. 1520 students are placed in core companies. But still that depends on your skills and we can’t blame the university for that.

Negative:

  1. The student to faculty ratio is too high.
  2. Faculty members are not very highly skilled, though they are postgraduates in their respective field. Most of them have completed M.Tech from other local colleges. There are very few from IITs and foreign universities.
  3. The curriculum is old.
  4. The evaluation system is also not very good.
  5. Very little research happens here. Most of the faculty members don’t have any publications
  6. Also, if you have a lot of money you can join in management quota into any branch you want. Almost half of the students have joined in management quota.

All the best.

Review of SRM Institute of Science and Technology.
Placements: I have recently started the course. However, based on reviews and feedback from seniors, I heard the placements are average. Companies offering placements are decent but they are not top companies. Our seniors got placed in good companies. There are internship programs available, where we can apply and get recruited.
Infrastructure: Wi-Fi is bad, though it is available. Hostel food is not good, and it is uncooked. Desks and tables in our classrooms are very bad and broken, they don't even bother to fix them. Despite paying a lot of money, they don't invest in improving anything but focus more on their benefit.
Faculty: Teachers are well-qualified but they are rude and strict. Semester exams are good. They treat their native students well, but their behavior towards outsiders is rude. In the initial days, they were good, but over time, they started showing their true colors. Currently, everyone adjusted.

College stands high at both pros and cons.
Placements: 70% of the students were placed and remaining chose higher studies. The lowest package was 2 LPA and the highest was 60 LPA and on average, 5 LPA was offered by top companies like Biocon, Serum, SunPharma, etc. that visited the campus placement and recruited talented students.
Infrastructure: With top-notch research facilities and equipments, labs are completely equipped with a variety of research facilities. Hostels are also pretty clean and well maintained. Food is considerably expensive, and various sports and games are offered like football, cricket, etc.
Faculty: Staff are helpful and knowledgeable, and the quality of education is high. A very well-structured curriculum with advanced learning and industry-ready structures. The end of the semester is competitive and the pass percentage is kept at 50 percent. Exams test our knowledge learned throughout the semester.

SRM thoroughly reviewed by a second-year student.
Placements: The placements for my branch are bad. The median package is between 5 to 7 Lacs per annum. The highest it has ever gone is somewhere in the 20 Lacs per annum range; that too could be an off-campus placement. Pharma, virology, and medical fields have requirements for biotechnology individuals.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure for my branch is pretty good and world-class. It is one of the best reasons for doing Biotechnology from SRM. The laboratories and equipment are all up to the mark and modern, which is essential to give us hands-on experience, which is vital in our field. The hostels, on the other hand, are average at best. The first-year hostels are clustered to fit in as many students as possible, but at least there are rooms available, which reduce drastically for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years. The common washrooms are comparable to railway washrooms, but the attached washrooms are still satisfactory.
Faculty: The teaching is a hit or a miss. The teachers are either good at explaining the concepts, or they just aren't able to impart the knowledge they possess. The faculty members, though, are highly qualified individuals who are doing their own research as well. The course curriculum follows the new NEP; it's as good as it could be, but there's always a huge room for improvement. The assessments are hectic, as we have CTs almost every month, along with assignments and projects adding up to a total of 60 marks for internals. The rest 40 marks are from the end-semesters of 75 marks, which is converted to 40, making the total 100 marks (60+40).
Other: The high-end infrastructure and equipment available for my course at SRM were the leading factors for me to join the course. The fests are good, especially the techno fest Aarush, but the Milan fest is more crowded due to locals also coming to the fest.

Review of B.Tech Biotechnology in SRM.
Placements: The placement percentage was 100% for my batch. The highest package offered was around 25 LPA by Microsoft and the average was 7-8 LPA for my batch. The top recruiting companies were TCS, Infosys, Cognizant, Amazon, Siemens, and Wipro, to name a few. In my department, only 50% of students sat for placements and the rest all went for higher studies.
Infrastructure: Facilities like classrooms, libraries, labs, and Wi-Fi were pretty good. There was plenty of equipment in the laboratories. Most of the hostels were shabby, except for one of the girl hostels, M Block. The staff was very strict and a few were very rude as well. The food was awful.
Faculty: Most of the teachers were qualified and knowledgeable, but hardly a few were friendly and approachable. No, it wasn't very curriculum-friendly and didn't make the students industry-ready at all. Internals and semester exams were pretty difficult and hard to score.
Other: I chose this course because of my keen interest in biology. One of the best things was that this course covered the topics from scratch. The course could be designed more specifically to prepare students for the workplace. Events and fests were pretty much happening all throughout the year.

Surprisingly good given the fee structure.
Placements: In 2024 placement session, ONLY 1 company came for biotech. If you're considering this stream in SRM, you better be mentally prepared that you'll have to either go for a Master's or look for off-campus placements. The package offered by the company was 3 LPA. None of my biotechnology peers have gotten any internships in biotech.
Infrastructure: Mess food is surprisingly decent. I and my friends genuinely look forward to going to the mess when we are hungry. Materials used are good, and the mess is very clean. The menu is also really diverse, and food in general is as good as mess food goes. The Wi-Fi is pretty good, giving an average download speed of about 5-6 Mbps in hostels and university buildings. Hostels are very clean. Aids come to clean your room and washrooms (including the commode) every single day and clean it properly. Dustbins are everywhere, so you won't see littering in hostel corridors. It’s very clean. Classrooms are decent, clean, and the Wi-Fi works well.
Faculty: Teachers are helpful most of the time, given that you're sincere with them. They check papers with leniency and are understanding. They are knowledgeable and well-qualified for the subject they are teaching. Their English, however, could have been better. Because of the thick Tamil accent, it’s very difficult for a non-Tamil to comprehend what they say sometimes, especially when their English speaking skills are subpar. Biotechnology is VERY RESEARCH-ORIENTED, which is a very good thing. Reading books only for a field as ever-evolving as biotech is not adequate. Exams are fairly EASY-MODERATE, and there is a saying around SRM that scoring a good CGPA (9+) is not a very difficult thing to do around here.
Other: I chose biotech in SRM because there are only a few colleges across India that offer B.Tech courses to PCB students, and out of those, SRM seemed to be the best option given the campus life and the research infrastructure. Events are good. Relevant celebrities show up at fests. Apart from fests, the festival celebrations are also good. SRM MUN is one of the bigger events throughout the year. The crowd is decent and friendly. There is no hint of North-South hostility. Things that could be better: laundry service, curfew time rules (it’s 9 PM for everyone), medical facilities, attendance system, and leave approval system. The location of the college is pretty nice; most people have a mountain view from their windows and greenery is all around. Pollution is minimal because it’s away from the mainland Chennai.

Students also asked

Q:   Can I join SRM IST without the entrance?

A:

Yes, SRM University offers direct admission to certain programs for eligible candidates who meet the required eligibility criteria. The admission criteria for these programs may include past academic performance, work experience, and other relevant factors. However, for most of the programs offered by SRM University, admission is through the SRMJEEE (SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination) or other national level entrance exams.

Therefore, it is recommended that you check the specific admission requirements for the programme you are interested in on the university's website or by contacting the admissions office. In case you do not qualify for direct admission or wish to appear for the entrance exam, you can apply for SRMJEEE and appear for the exam. The exam is conducted annually and is the basis for admission to several programs offered by the university.

Q:   Which campus of SRM is the best to pursue BTech?

A:

The best campus of SRM University to pursue BTech is the Kattankulathur campus. It is the largest campus of SRM University and has the best infrastructure, faculty, and placements. The campus is spread over 2,500 acres and has all the facilities that a student needs, including hostels, classrooms, laboratories, sports facilities, and a library. The faculty at the campus is highly qualified and experienced. The campus also has good placements. During the SRMIST placements 2023, the highest package and average package offered stood at INR 57 LPA and INR 7.58 LPA, respectively.

Q:   Which of these is better for BTech CSE: Thapar University or SRM University, Kattankulathur?

A:

Both the colleges are equally good, but I will vote for Thapar University, Patiala because of the standard which the University has maintained since its establishment. I will try to distinguish between both colleges with the help of certain parameters:

  • ADMISSION PROCESS: Thapar University admits its students on the basis of JEE main marks. Usually cutoff goes higher for Computer engineering (around 180). While SRM University conducts its own examination called SRMJEE.
  • CAMPUS: SRM University has a very good and beautiful campus. Student intake is higher at SRM University.
  • Thaper don't have any management quota seat whereas SRM had few seats reserved for the management quota. The fee is almost similar in both colleges. And location-wise Chennai has the upper hand over Patiala.

Q:   Is SRM Kattankulathur costly to study BTech?

A:

SRM Kattankulathur is a private university, so the tuition fees is relatively high. However, it is still more affordable than many other private universities in India. The tuition fees for BTech at SRM Kattankulathur range from INR 10 lakh - INR 18 lakh, depending on the specialisation.

In addition to tuition fees, students also need to pay other fees such as hostel fees, mess fees, and exam fees. The cost of hostel, mess and laundry can range from INR 1 lakh to INR 2.5 lakh per year, depending upon the room or bed you wish to choose. Whether or not SRM Kattankulathur is costly to study BTech depends on your financial situation as well.

Q:   Is there any seat reservation for BTech at SRM University?

A:

SRM University admits students based on a valid score of SRMJEE. Candidates who qualify the exam are offered seats via a university-level counselling process. There is no seat reservation policy found on SRM IST. However, other SRM University campuses might offer seat reservations for Engineering courses. Candidates are advised to visit the official website or the admission office of the university to find more details around the same.
