Sikhism is a monotheistic religion that originated in Punjab, India, around the 15th century. Sikhism is one of the youngest of the major religions and is the world’s fifth largest organized religion. Sikhism is taught on the basis of the spiritual teachings of Guru Nanak, who was the first Guru (1469-1539), followed by the nine Sikh Gurus who succeeded him. It was Guru Gobind Singh, who was the tenth Guru who named the Sikh scripture- Guru Granth Sahib as his successor closing the line of human gurus and establishing the scripture as the 11th and last eternally living guru. Guru Granth Sahib ji is a religious spiritual/life guide for Sikhs.

Sikhism emphasizes Simran (meditation and remembrance of the teachings of Gurus), which can be expressed musically through kirtan, or internally through naam japna ('meditation on His name') as a means to feel God's presence. It teaches followers to transform the "Five Thieves" (i.e. lust, rage, greed, attachment, and ego).

Sikhism is now classified as an Indian religion along with Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. The Sikh community of men and women is known as the Khalsa, which means the ‘Community of the Pure’. In order to join the Khalsa and convert to Sikhism, one needs to follow the five K’s which are – Kesh, Kirpan, Kara, Kacchera and Kanga.

Many universities across the globe offer BA, MA and Diploma in Sikh theology/ Study of religion.
