Ancient philosophy, spanning from the 6th century BCE to the 6th century CE, was characterized by a focus on metaphysics, ethics, and political philosophy. Thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle explored fundamental questions about reality, ethics, and human nature through dialectic reasoning and philosophical dialogue.

Concepts such as the theory of forms by Plato and virtue ethics by Aristotle shaped subsequent Western philosophical traditions. In contrast, modern philosophy emerged primarily from the 17th to the 20th century, witnessing a shift towards epistemology, scientific inquiry, and skepticism. Thinkers like René Descartes, Immanuel Kant, and John Locke laid the groundwork for modern thought, addressing issues of knowledge, reality, and the nature of existence through empirical observation, rational analysis, and the adoption of the scientific method. The methodologies and focus of ancient and modern philosophy reflect the changing intellectual landscape and the evolving understanding of the world throughout history.
