Paramedics are one of the strong pillars of the medical profession. The paramedic professionals play a pivotal role in emergency treatments and perform various technical duties in the healthcare sector. Paramedical courses are the most sought-after courses besides the MBBS that one can pursue after clearing Class 12.

These are both diploma and degree courses for the graduate and postgraduate levels. Therapists, nurses, pharmacologists, etc., are the paramedic professionals who have to perform duties like taking blood samples, conducting urine and various other lab tests, and much more. Therefore, the paramedical syllabus is designed accordingly. The diploma-level courses have a duration ranging from one to three years. The bachelor's courses generally have a duration of three to four years, whereas master's courses are typically 2-year programmes.

Paramedical Syllabus – Important Facts

  • Top Paramedical Courses

Some of the popular paramedical courses include Diploma in Nursing Care Assistant, BSc in Nursing, MD in Pathology, Anaesthesia, Radiodiagnosis, Health Nursing, and MSc in Community Health Nursing, Obstetrics, and Gynaecology.

  • Semesters

Most bachelor-level courses are three-year courses, except for nursing, a four-year course. Therefore, the semesters could be between six to eight, covering two semesters each year. Some bachelor courses like BSc in Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences have a duration of five years. The diploma and master's courses generally have a duration of two years. Therefore, the syllabus of these courses is usually divided into four semesters.

  • Exam Pattern of Paramedical Courses

The exams are held at the end of every year. Each subject carries a total of 100 marks, with 80 marks reserved for theoretical paper and 20 marks reserved for internal assessment. To clear the exam, the students need to secure 50% marks in the main subjects and 35% in the subsidiary subjects.

  • Paramedical Syllabus in IITs

IITs offer a wide range of paramedical courses in naturopathy, electro-homoeopathy, hydrotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, aromatherapy, chromotherapy, etc. The main objective of these courses is to develop alternative medicine systems that can be useful for saving the lives of those in distress.

  • Paramedical Syllabus in NITs

NITs offer a wide range of diploma courses in paramedical sciences. The core objectives of the syllabus are to make the students acquainted with the medical lab technologies and establish their skills as medical workers who can handle emergencies.

  • Changes in the Syllabus

There are slight modifications in the syllabus of paramedical courses as per updates in the curriculum and assessment methods. For instance, the syllabus format of the General Nursing and Midwifery training programme was last changed in 2015. It included clear directions for objectives, assignments, and assessment methods to facilitate better teaching.

Syllabus for Distance Programme in Paramedical Courses

Some colleges and universities offer distance programmes for various paramedical courses. However, most of these distance programmes are certificate-level or diploma-level courses. The syllabus for the distance programme is identical to the one that is adopted for the regular programmes. The duration of the distance programmes can be slightly longer as they are specially designed for candidates who want to complete their studies while working. Therefore, if a particular diploma course is of 2-years in the regular mode, the distance programme can be up to three or four years depending upon the institution where the student is studying. The exam format is also identical and held online for distance programmes.

Some of the top colleges for distance programmes in paramedical courses include TNOU Chennai, ISBM Bangalore, ISBM Cochin, VMOU Kota, IIMPS New Delhi, AICR Delhi, and ICRA Dehradun.

FAQs Regarding Paramedical Syllabus

Q: Are paramedical courses more difficult than other medical courses?

A: No, both the courses are of the same difficulty level. While paramedical courses deal with the diagnostic procedures, treatment, and eradication of health issues and diseases, medical courses incorporate the procedures required to be learnt for practising medicine. Many paramedical professionals also do surgeries and treatments as a part of their duties.

Q: Which are the most popular paramedical courses?

A: Some of the most popular paramedical courses are listed below:
  • Radiology Technician

  • Emergency Medical Technician

  • DHA - Diploma in Hospital Administration

  • DMLT - Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology

  • BOTT - Bachelors in Operating Theatre Technician

  • DOTT - Diploma in Operation Theatre Technician

Q: How to get admission into paramedical courses?

A: To secure admission in paramedical courses after Class 12, the students can appear in various state, national and university/college-level entrance tests. Some of the popular entrance tests are NEET-UG, MH-CET, JIPMER, etc. Upon securing high marks in these tests, the students can easily get admission to their desired college or university.

Q: Is NEET compulsory for getting admission to paramedical courses?

A: Though the students who have appeared in NEET can seek admission in paramedical courses, it is not compulsory to appear in this entrance exam. It is because various educational institutes, universities, and colleges have their own entrance exams that will help the students secure admission without any hassles. The students will need to apply for these entrance exams by visiting the official portal of the respective educational institute.

Q: Do the students who wish to seek admission into a foreign university/college require to appear for the English test?

A: Yes, if the student is going to seek admission to a university or college that is located in an English speaking country, they will have to clear the English test. It is because a certain level of fluency in speaking, writing, and comprehending the English language is expected from these students. Some of the popular English language tests are Duolingo, TOEFL, IELTS, and CAE.

Q: Which are the different types of paramedical courses?

A: The paramedical courses can be categorised into certificate courses, diploma courses, bachelor courses, and master’s courses. The certificate courses and diploma courses can usually be taken after clearing the Class 10 exam. For bachelor-level courses, the students need to clear Class 12, whereas master’s courses require the students to complete their bachelor-level studies in the respective subjects.

Q: Are there any differences between the Paramedical and Allied Health Sciences?

A: Though both Paramedical and Allied Health Sciences deal with the same concepts, Allied Health Sciences involve an extensive study of the concepts. On the contrary, Paramedical Sciences deal with more basic concepts and studies. However, the subjects of both Allied Health Sciences and Paramedical Science can be strikingly similar.

Q: What do the paramedical courses offer through their syllabus?

A: The paramedical professionals have to play a crucial role in emergency conditions. Therefore, paramedical science is a perfect blend of medical knowledge and social skills. The syllabus of the paramedical courses is designed to prepare the students to work under pressure, as their decision could often be crucial to a patient’s life.

Q: Is paramedical and nursing the same?

A: According to the Indian Nursing Council, nursing is a separate education and should not be related or linked with paramedical studies. Nursing is a separate profession which is also identified by WHO to be an independent area of study. Therefore, nursing courses should not be included with the other paramedical courses.

Q: What does the radiology syllabus include?

A: Radiology is a part of the paramedical studies that deals with the study of diagnostic procedures that are conducted with the help of radiation. It includes the diagnosis of a medical condition with the help of technological equipment and medicine. Therefore, it is an essential part of the syllabus of many paramedical courses.

Q: Why is the subject of Pathology important in the syllabus of paramedical courses?

A: Pathology is a part of medical science that involves the study of medical procedures required to test or diagnose certain conditions or diseases. Biopsy samples, bodily fluids like blood or saliva, and tissues are to be examined to study the nature of the disease. As it actually includes the activities that are conducted in a clinical pathology lab, it is an essential part of the paramedical syllabus.
