What is Quota Sampling?

Quota sampling is the most important part of the survey. Sample means a part of the entire population which is taken for the survey, and the result is interpreted. The mechanism of choosing and selecting a particular sample from the entire population is called sampling.

Types of Sampling

There are seven types of sampling which are broadly divided into two kinds.

1. Random or probability Sampling

    1. Unrestricted or Simple random sampling-
    2. Systematic random sampling
    3. Cluster sampling
    4. Stratified sampling

2. Non-random or non-probability sampling

    1. Judgement sampling
    2. Convenience sampling
    3. Quota sampling

Quota sampling process

Let us look at the process of collecting quota sampling data.

  • Dividing the entire population into various subgroups
  • Adjusting the weightage of the various subgroups
  • Selecting the right sample for the survey
  • The survey starts

Uses of Quota Sampling

Let us look at some of the uses of quota sampling.

  • This sampling helps in providing the best data for the survey based on fixed quota or samples.
  • The samples collected in it are the nearest in terms of the population trends and interests.
  • This sampling helps the researchers to undergo a study to determine any relationships between the various subsets and determine the trends in it.
  • This sampling helps in getting the survey done in less amount of time and with less cost involved.

Weightage of Quota Sampling in Class X and Class XI

The chapter ‘Statistics’, talks about determining the mean, mode, and median of grouped data, and the graphical representation of cumulative frequency distribution.

The chapter ‘Statistics’ talks about various methods of statistics, measuring dispersion, mean diversion, variance and standard deviation, and analysis of frequency distributions.
best results in terms of the population trends, used to study the relationships between various samples collected.

Illustrative Examples on Quota Sampling

1. The mean and variance of eight observations are 9 and 9.25. If the six out of eight observations are 6, 7, 10, 12, 12, and 13. What are the other two observations?

Solution.

Let the two observations be x and y.

Mean= (6+7+10+12+12+13+x+y)/8= 9
       = x + y = 12 ————— (i)

Variance= (1/N) i=18∑(xi-x)2 = 9.25
            = (1/8) [9+ 4+ 1+ 9+ 16+ x2 + y2 -2 x 9 (x+y)+ 2 x (9)2] —————(1)
            = x2 + y2 = 80 ————— (2)

From (1), x2 + y2 + 2xy= 144 ————— (3)

From (2) and (3), 2xy = 64 ————— (4)

Subtracting (4) and (2), x- y= 4 ————— (5)

From (1) and (5), x=8 and y=4, when x-y=4
             x=4 and y=8, when x-y=-4
2.The mean and deviation of fifty students are given below. Which among the three shows the highest and the lowest variability in marks?

Subject

Mathematics

Physics

Chemistry

Mean

42

32

40.9

Standard deviation (SD)

12

15

20

Solution.

The coefficient of variation (CV)= (SD/Mean) x 100

CV for maths= (12/42) x 100 = 28.57

CV for physics= (15/32) x 100 = 46.87

CV for chemistry= (20/40.9) x 100 = 48.89

Highest variability - Chemistry    Lowest variability - Mathematics

3. The mean and SD of six observations are 8 and 4, respectively. If each observation is multiplied by 3. Find the new mean and SD?

Solution.

New mean= 8 x3 = 24
SD= 4 x 3 = 12

FAQ on Quota Sampling

Q: What are samples and population?

A: The sample is the part of the entire population taken for a survey, whereas the population is the entire segment where the survey is conducted.

Q: What is Quota sampling?

A: Quota sampling is referred to as a collection of a particular sample from a population-based on certain properties.

Q: What are the two major types of sampling?

A: The two major divisions of sampling are- Random sampling and non-random sampling. Quota sampling comes under non-random sampling.

Q: What are the steps under Quota sampling?

A: The steps followed under Quota sampling are - Dividing the entire population into various subgroups, adjusting the weightage of the various subgroups, selecting the right sample for the survey, and the survey starts.

Q: What are the uses of Quota sampling?

A: Quota sampling is used in getting the best results in terms of the population trends, used to study the relationships between various samples collected.
