Q:   Is BTech at Jamia Millia Islamia good?

A:

The answer to whether BTech from Jamia Millia Islamia is good or not depends on a lot of factors. All these factors are listed below one after another:

  • Specialisations: BTech at Jamia is available across the five most common specialisations, namely, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Electronics & Communication and Mechanical Engineering. In a world where more in-depth specialisations, such as Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are trending the university still sticks to the basic courses. For students looking out for core information on the trending areas of AI and ML, it can't be considered a good option. But in case, a student wishes to stay with the traditional branches, Jamia Millia Islamia can be a good option.
  • Placements: Another factor that comes into consideration while choosing a college for a course is its return on investment value. The same can be calculated basis of the kind of placements offered to the students. As per the data collated from the verified students' reviews on Shikhsa, the majority of students mention that 70-90% of BTech students get placement opportunities from Jamia.  Additionally, the salary packages start from INR 3-4 LPA as the lowest and go up to even INR 25 Lacs per annum for some students.
  • Fee: While the general fee for BTech ranges from INR 2 to 5 Lacs per annum for colleges in India, Jamia Millia Islamia charges INR 16,150 annually for its BTech programme which is extremely low. Hence, concerning the fee, Jamia Millia Islamia is a great option for BTech.

Based on the factors mentioned above and the requirements of candidates, they can decide whether they want to go ahead with Jamia Millia Islamia for BTech or not. Read more about BTech reviews from Jamia Millia Islamia students here.

Q:   Which is better JMI or AMU for BTech?

A:

Both Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia offers BTech course for a duration of four years. AMU BTech will range between INR 15,690 and INR 10.78 lakh, whereas JMI BTech fee is comparatively less i.e. INR 64,600. Talking about the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 rankings, AMU was ranked 32 in the Engineering category, whereas, JMI ranked 26th spot in the list. Apart from the ranking and fees, JMI BTech placements are also good when compared to AMU. During, AMU BTech placements 2022, the highest package offered was INR 21 LPA. On the other hand, Jamia Millia Islamia the highest package stood at INR 25 LPA during the 2023 BTech placements drive. So, considering all the aspects mentioned here, JMI is better than AMU for BTech.

A:

For last year, the closing rank for B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering was 25361 which is very close to this range. This was for general category under All India quota. Unless the candidate belongs to some other category or domicile, one cannot afford to score less than this. With this rank, there is a probability of getting admission however since, the cut offs keep changing year on year, it is advisable to try to score better ranks to increase your chances of getting admission in Jamia Millia Islamia [JMI].

Satisfied with the faculty members and the facilities.
Placements: In the last year, the 2024 batch, approximately 40% of students in mechanical engineering got placed. The mass recruiter was L&T, which took approximately 19% of students. In the current year, the 2025 batch, after the completion of the 1st placement session, approximately 23% of students got placed with the highest package of 7.5 LPA offered by Idea and 15% hired by L&T. The highest package is 7 LPA, and the lowest was 3 LPA, making an average of 3.5 LPA. In the last year, approximately 90% of students got the internship, but there is not any specific company. The topmost role offered is junior graduate engineer trainee.
Infrastructure: As a central university, it has a good infrastructure and full access to Wi-Fi, a library, and good lab facilities with well-knowledgeable faculty members. The department staff were very helpful and cooperative. Every classroom under the mechanical department has a projector installed and is in working condition. The engineering faculty has its own auditorium. In the hostel you'll have access to Wi-Fi and a decent room with a study table, a chair, and a bed for each student. The quality of food fluctuates between good and poor, but most of the time it is average, but the menu is well designed. There are numbers of canteens present throughout the university. Jamia offers free medical treatment to its students. Jamia has one of the biggest sports facilities in Delhi after IIT, where it organizes sports events.
Faculty: In the Mechanical Engineering Department, all the teachers were well qualified, knowledgeable, and helpful. The quality of teaching was excellent; almost all the professors gave their 100%. Yes, after the implementation of the new pattern, the courses were more relevant than they were before, but you always need to develop a new skill in every course. The semester was comparatively easy, and the pass percentage is 40%, and you'll need to be passed in both internal and the external individual.
Other: The best thing I like in mechanical engineering is the relatability with the world and the practical applications. I think the classroom needs more improvements. Jamia organizes various events and fests as there are numbers of societies. You will always have an option for extracurricular activity, as Jamia supports this.

    Jamia Millia Islamia from inside.
Placements: Percentage of students placed in my course varies every year; last year it was around 50-60%. The top recruiter is L&T for the Mechanical Engineering department with a CTC of 6-8 LPA. The lowest package offer is 3.5 LPA, and the highest package goes up to 14-15 LPA. Roles offered are Design Engineering, GET, and Software Engineer. About 80-90% of students do at least one internship in their college year; some of them are provided by the recruiting companies like L&T, Mahindra, and others; they grab it via applying to the company by themselves.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is excellent. Every classroom is equipped with a projector for teaching. Not all, but many classrooms have AC. Wi-Fi facilities are available in every classroom. There is a huge excess of books, magazines, current improvements in technologies, novels, articles etc. In the department library and the Zakir Hussain University Library. The college has a huge sports complex in which facilities are available for most of the sports. The hostel has quite good infrastructure with Wi-Fi, RO, water cooler, hot shower, common room, and playground. The mess food depends on the hostel you are residing in. It is okayish but could be improved. Both veg and non-veg options are available. Gym facilities are also there in the hostels. For students of the college, there is a hospital ( M.A. Ansari Hospital) and a dentistry department where they can get treatment at no cost when needed.
Faculty: The faculty here is very experienced and knowledgeable, with many having experience over 30+ years. They know, with that many years of experience, how to teach to the student in the most efficient and logical way possible. They have their degrees from IITs and many renowned foreign universities. The teaching quality is 9/10. The curriculum is updated every few years and is relevant to the industry level, but there are some gaps which need to be filled, like the integration of technologies like AI and ML, which may be integrated within a few years. The semester exams vary on the subject, but overall, it’s a moderate to difficult level with a passing percentage of about 90 to 95% .
Other: The college has enormous opportunities to connect with people like you. There are many societies here to join, like the dance, painting, music clubs, and there are many societies to work on your technical skills along with people like you. Some societies are IEEE Jamia, TRS Jamia, ASME Jamia, SAE , etc. There are non-technical societies to develop leadership qualities in you, like Enactus, 180DC Jamia, etc. The college hosts many cultural and technical fests, like Crescentia and Jasn-e-Aagaaz, which are cultural fests, and technical fests are Enconium and Celestra, Thrive etc. Which held in Jan-Feb each year. There are many other event. Seminars, like seminars and talks, which are held all around the year. The faculty is outstanding and very supportive. These are the reasons I chose this course in the college. Things that could be improved are that there should be more emphasis on the practical aspect and that there should be some relation between attendance, which is currently 75% mandatory attendance.

Best for the students from weak financial background.
Placements: I don't know much about placements, but as far as I know, almost 50% of students get placed. The highest salary in 2023 was 13 LPA, and the lowest was 4 LPA, with an average salary of 6 LPA. Top recruiting companies include TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki.
Infrastructure: The college infrastructure is not great; it feels like a poorly maintained government hospital. However, the facilities for Wi-Fi and the library are up to the mark. The quality of food is good, and the hostel facilities are decent. Sports facilities are good, but the timing is restricted to 5 PM, which is a concern.
Faculty: The teachers are helpful but tend to have an ego, like most professors. They are well-qualified and knowledgeable. However, the course curriculum is not relevant; it mostly focuses on theoretical knowledge rather than the practical skills required in the industry. Semester exams are moderate, with a passing percentage of 40%.
Other: I chose mechanical engineering because of my interest in Physics and my desire to create innovations that can change the world and reduce human effort significantly. I believe the college should focus more on teaching practical knowledge and industry-relevant skills rather than just theoretical content. Events and fests are poorly organized, and the crowd lacks ambition. The connectivity is excellent, with a metro station just 500 meters away and a bus stop 100 meters from the main gate.

Life at Jamia: Through an Engineering POV.
Placements: Around 70-75 percent of students get placed in my department of Mechanical engineering. The highest package offered yet is 14 LPA by ZS Associate, and the lowest is about 3.36 LPA by Tata Consultancy Services. Around 90 percent of students get internships from our course in various industries as well as government PSUs.
Infrastructure: The facilities provided are top-class from the university. The infrastructure is pretty good. Most of the buildings are old but are renovated termly. All the buildings are accommodated with Wi-Fi and top-end classrooms. The hostel is very peaceful with lawns in front of every building. Hostels are provided with common rooms, reading rooms, and Wi-Fi connections in all the rooms.
Faculty: The professors are very knowledgeable and experienced. Most of the professors have done their Ph.D. from IITs and also have some industry experience. The teaching style is old school with interacting new technologies as well. The course is up to date and is very engaging and fun. The semester exams are of moderate levels and require some amount of critical thinking while answering.
Other: I chose this course because I love engineering, and I always wanted to study in a government college. Also, the university is very affordable, and the NIRF ranking of the college is also a plus point. There is not much that I want to improve, but the classes should be renovated and made a little bit better. A lot of events happen in the college, and the crowd is very diverse.

Great faculty, infrastructure and facilities. I am having the time of my life here.
Placements: A good amount of students were placed from our branch, Electrical Engineering. It probably had the highest placement rate out of all the other branches after Computer Engineering. Reliance, Tata Steel, and Philips are a few of the companies that recruit people from my course.
Infrastructure: The facilities and infrastructure are good. Its a three-story building with multiple entries and a lift at the crux of it. There are 3-4 water coolers on every floor and the Wi-Fi is great. Classrooms are a bit old yet tidy and air-conditioned. The library for our department is filled with all the necessary books required for me as an engineering student.
Faculty: Yes, the teachers are helpful and seniors are compliant as well. The teachers that reach me are helpful with their resources and always push their hardest to bring out the best in us. Their efforts really do get to me and motivate me to do even more. And the course is curricular relevant, although I don't know why we have to study biology and EVs (environment science) in the first semester. I haven't given my semester exams yet so I don't have any clue about that.
Other: I'd hope for more extracurricular activities such as fests and clubs like debate clubs, music clubs, drama clubs and so on to be more active. I like the pace in here and it's a great college except for the lack of fests and club activities.
