Marine engineering involves knowledge of mechanical equipment that is used in ships, sailboats, submarines, etc. Both undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered in marine engineering. The undergraduate courses involve BE and B. Tech in marine engineering and PG diploma courses are also available. For the PG course, students need to complete either a BE or a B. Tech course whereas a minimum qualification of 10+2 is required to apply for the UG courses. Basically, marine engineering courses are related to the concepts that are relevant in nautical science and architecture.

Syllabus - Important Facts for Marine Engineering

Course Duration: BTech or BE in marine engineering are 4-year courses that are divided into 8 semesters. PG diploma in marine engineering is a 1-year course.
Eligibility: The students who have completed 10+2 with at least 60% marks in the PCM group and 50% marks in English in either the 11th or 12th class. The students who have secured at least 60% marks in BE or B. Tech marine engineering courses are eligible for the PG diploma course.
Marine Engineering Syllabus: MIT offers a 4-year marine engineering course that includes subjects like Engineering Mechanics, Applied Thermodynamics, Mathematics, Material Science, Ship Construction, etc.
Marine Engineering Syllabus in IIT: IIT Madras is considered to be one of the best colleges for learning marine engineering courses. The syllabus is similar to that of MIT.
Exam format: The marine engineering courses include both theoretical and practical exams. The performance evaluation exams are held at the end of every semester and both core and elective subjects are included in them.
Internship: The students also need to participate in an internship programme in the last two semesters. During the internship, the students have to work as an intern in a commercial company, marine industry, or maritime. Marine engineering graduates also need to complete at least 6 months of internship at sea to grasp the watchkeeping skills.
Scope in India: Marine engineering courses have a huge scope in India as the country is expanding its presence in oceans. Both private companies and naval forces offer plenty of working opportunities to marine engineers.
