M.Sc economics at Kantakol campus, University of Calcutta. It gives an experience for life.
Placements: The college has quite good placement records for every department. The percentage of students getting placed is increasing every year. The highest package offered as of now is 7.5 lakhs per annum, the lowest is around 4 lakhs per annum, and the average is about 5.5 lakhs per annum. Data Analytics Units of Evalueserv, TCS, HSBC, Genpact, etc., recruited the students from our college. The college has a placement cell, it works quite effectively for our department. Most of the students seeking internships got their internships in the summer vacation after their 1st year, in various banks like HSBC and SBI. Many students joined data analytics courses or some econometric software packages like R and SAS.
Infrastructure: Our campus is in the serene lapse of nature in the midst of the city and is having quite a large infrastructure suitable for a single department academic campus. There are many infrastructural needs which are still unfulfilled. Wi-Fi facilities are not up to the mark. Classrooms are quite well. We also have an auditorium, it would have been better to have a bigger one. The teacher to student ratio is quite high. For a total of 460 students, approximately, we have around 14 permanent teachers and numerous visiting faculty from well-established colleges and universities including ISI Kolkata, IIM Calcutta. Apart from that, we have labs for econometrics, operations, research and experimental economics. However, the lab facilities require improvement. The canteen is not up to mark, but the quality of food is good, but there are not many varieties present in the menu. However, there are technical and demand constraints to improve the quality of canteen. Hostels for boys are available quite close to the campus, but to reach girls' hostel, students need to walk about 45 minutes, considering the general traffic in the city of Kolkata. The quality of hostel for the economics department of Calcutta University is relatively better than that for other departments, but still, it is far behind those of IITs, IIMs or DSE.
Faculty: The permanent faculty in our college have done PhD from premier institutions abroad like UBC, New York State University, and University of California. Many great teachers are available with outstanding teaching abilities. However, the course curriculum designed is not updated enough as far my personal judgement is concerned. More rigorous, technical and data analysis courses could have been taught. However, advancements in the courses are going on. The college provides a variety of courses and optional papers. Unique courses like experimental economics, Marxian economics (with the modern nondeterministic frame of analysis), political economics of development, money and finance, international economics, operations research, econometrics, globalisation, development economics, urban economics, industrial economics, health economics, game theory, etc., are available. The teaching methods like classic blackboard teaching, projector, powerpoint presentation, etc., are used. The curriculum is quite useful for the content, and there is a scope of knowledge gathering. But, we probably require more research orientation for academic excellence.

Katakol Campus- A Legacy of 100years.
Placements: Placement committee is very responsive & hard working. The result of this is very good. Already 57* students got placed. The highest salary offered 7lakh/annum. The lowest is around 4lakh/annum. A huge number of students got internship in various field. This year over 140 students have applied for placement drive. & still the process is going on. Last year around 40 students got on campus placement. With a comparison to, last two years placement statistics, this session is showing a promising result. Which is a good picture for us.
Infrastructure: Infrastructure is good. It is a 100 years old campus. Wi-Fi is their for research purpose. 2 smart classrooms are there. Library is very good. But due to lack of space, there is no provision for outdoor sports. You can opt for table tennis, chess. First aid facilities are there.
Faculty: Faculty members are one of the best in this state and are also reputated. Most of them are quite helpful & student friendly. All of them are well experienced. Their qualifications & knowledge are unquestionable. But the teacher student ratio is not properly maintained sometimes. We get inspiration for analytics sector & research line. In the first year, we have to study about basic concept of economics, in various field. And in the final year, we get chance to choose special field.
Other: Katakol campus is located, just beside Rabindra-Bharati University. It is a small campus. Consists of around 500 students. Every year 2 cultural fests are being held since 2008. Scholarship facility is there for meritorious & financially poor students.

The University of Calcutta, department of economics.
Placements: A multitude of companies come for placements for the analytics domain. The package ranges from 3.5-8.5 LPA. The companies come like Mu Sigma, Netscribes, Genpact, etc. visit here. The main thrust of the place is in research. One of the best places for budding intellectuals.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is decent. This place has a well-equipped library. Books range from at least 1800s. Amartya Sen books are also available here. The best place to conduct research. You can take books for a month. A good place indeed. Join to experience the existence.
Faculty: The faculty is of international repute. They don't teach, they perform. One of the best places to learn economics in West Bengal. Teachers range from alumni of the University of British Columbia, University of California Berkeley, Jadavpur University. Sixteen electives are offered. Advanced econometrics is the most sought after.

The university is good with the good faculty and infrastructure, but the placements are poor.
Placements: Some MNCs visit for the campus placements. Most of the jobs based in Bangalore. About, 10% of the students got placed, and the others got jobs within a few months. The salary ranges from 15K to 30K. Genpact, Mu Sigma, Pradhan, Netscribes were some of the companies hire the students. Most of the students of economics got placed as the data analysts. There is a placement cell, which works to bring in companies or forward emails about the vacancies for the students.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure provided was more or less sufficient. The library, the computer labs, and the common room with TT and carrom boards are good. The classrooms were big and airy. The canteen offers the food at the cheap rates. The medical facilities were slightly lacking, and there was no hostel provision.
Faculty: There was a blend of both good and bad teachers. But most were helpful and taught well. Mostly lecture method used was for the dissemination of knowledge. The certain projects were a part of the curriculum. We were a batch of about 200 students, with a faculty of about ten professors. The course curriculum was stressful but comprehensive.

Calcutta University, Economics Department
Placements: Placements efforts by the placement committee were commendable. 40% percentage of the students were placed. The syllabus is tilted towards academics. Hence, students willing to option for private sector shouldn't apply. However, in recent years the placement committee is really trying to bring companies. Lowest package offered was 3.25 LPA(Deloitte for transfer pricing role) and the highest was 7.75 LPA (HSBC). Companies like Genpact, Affine analytics, Ipsos, HSBC, Deloitte, Mu Sigma, Evalueserve, Pradan, Bridge i2i visited the campus. Analyst was the main position that was offered. Around 30 - 40% students got internship from college. The stipend is available only for meritorious and poor students (however it is of very small amount). Details is available in the placement brochure of Economics department, Calcutta University.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is not very good. However, the practical labs are nice and are equipped with STATA. The department still dosesn't teach software like R. Classrooms are equipped with fully functional projectors. The library is also nice with a huge collection of books, articles, and journals. Internet facility is available free of cost and the department has subscriptions to famous online journals and articles. Area for games, however, is limited. Hostel rooms are not that good and food options are limited. However, the existing infrastructure needs to be strengthened.
Faculty: The faculty is really nice and qualified. However, they majorly give emphasis to academics and the student-teacher ratio is very poor with 250 students and 12 to 13 full-time teachers. Industry exposure was given through analytics seminar and summer analytics programme.
Other: The department should give more emphasis on finance topics so that financial institutions can also come for placement. Reducntant papers should be removed from the syllabus. Banking institutions dosen't come for placement. Also, it's difficult to score than other universities. Because of this, two companies didn't came for placement.
