Entrance Exams for Mechanical Engineering

Several entrance examinations are conducted every year for admission to Mechanical Engineering programmes in India. For B.Tech programmes, some of the entrance exams are IIT-JEE, BITSAT, UPESEAT, and VITEEE.

  • The JEE examination is the biggest engineering entrance examination in India, taken by lakhs of students every year. Students can get admission to various IITs, NITs, government and private colleges through JEE scores. The exam has two phases - JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. It is considered a very difficult exam. It is even considered among the toughest examinations all over the world. There is immense competition in the JEE examination, and students must have a deep understanding of technical concepts to crack the examination.
  • BITSAT is the Birla Institute of Technology and Science Aptitude Test conducted for admission to technical programmes on three Birla Institute of Technology campuses in Pilani, Hyderabad, and Goa. The eligibility criteria for the test include a minimum of 75 per cent aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or Biology in class 12th and a minimum of 60% in each of the mentioned subjects. The level of the test is moderate-to-difficult with several application-based and numerical questions.
  • VITEEE is the entrance examination for admission to B.Tech programmes at VIT Vellore. The test is moderate-to-difficult with 120 questions to be solved in 150 minutes. The eligibility criteria include a minimum aggregate of 55 per cent in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology in class 12.

The exams include questions from the curriculum of 11th and 12th standards - Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Most of these entrance examinations ask practical and concept-based questions rather than direct questions. Students should prepare for these exams by building strong fundamentals practising numerical and previous years’ questions. Taking these entrance exams can help aspiring engineers grab seats in their preferred colleges.

Syllabus for Distance Programme in Mechanical Engineering

Students can opt for distance diploma or certification programmes in Mechanical Engineering as approved by the UGC. These programmes offer distance or online education to students who don’t want to study in a regular programme or attend a college physically. Online or distance B.Tech programmes in Mechanical Engineering are deemed invalid in India as per AICTE. Although some private institutes offer distance B.Tech programmes, the degrees earned through these colleges are invalid.

For postgraduate programmes in Mechanical Engineering, the facility of a part-time degree is available. So, students can opt for a part-time M.Tech programme after completing the B.Tech programme. The syllabus for part-time M.Tech is the same as that for full-time M.Tech while the fee is less than that of full-time courses. A valid GATE score is essential to pursue part-time M.Tech from IITs, NITs, and other valuable institutions.
