UPSC IAS Topper 2020 Jatin Kishore Shares his IAS strategy. Read below for details
UPSC IAS topper 2020 Jatin Kishore secured all India rank 2 in the coveted civil services exam 2019. He achieved this feat in his second attempt. In his first attempt, he did not qualify the IAS prelim exam.
He was born and brought up in New Delhi only and a postgraduate in Economics. His cadre preference was AGMUT, but he is ready to serve anywhere in India. After his Master’s degree, he dedicated one year for the IAS preparation and appeared in the IAS prelims exam, but unfortunately did not qualify it. Meanwhile, he cleared the Indian Economic Services Exam and undergoing training. He appeared in the IAS exam while undergoing the training.
IAS Prelims Strategy
In his first attempt, he did not clear the IAS prelims exam. This was his second attempt and he secured the second rank in Civil Services exam. The IAS topper said that in the first IAS prelims, he attempted a fewer number of questions and hence he did not breach the IAS prelims cut off. He did not repeat the same mistake in his second chance and attempted more number of questions (85-90) and qualified the IAS prelims 2019.

He suggested that one should attempt a good number of questions so that even after the final calculations of negative marking in the IAS prelims exam, the candidates can score well above the IAS prelims cutoff.

Current Affairs
IAS topper 2020 Jatin Kishore stressed on the importance of Current Affairs for the IAS exam. He said current affairs is the most important part of the IAS preparation and the candidates should prepare the current affairs of preceded one year for the IAS preparation. He said that the old current affairs keep reappearing in the news and it became important for the IAS main exam.

He said the monthly current affairs and issue-based magazines help in revising at the time of IAS exams. He did not refer to the PIB website daily but limited his current affairs approach to the newspaper and monthly current affairs magazine.
Newspaper Reading
UPSC topper 2020 said that the Newspaper is the most important source for the IAS preparation. It provides a detailed analysis of the issues and the undercurrents of the prospective events. He did not miss the newspaper and if missed; he covers it on the very next day. He suggested that the candidates should make quick notes of the important articles published in the newspaper.
As per the IAS topper, Newspaper should be supported by the Monthly current affairs magazine. He underlined the importance of special issues of the current affairs magazines because it covers the issues thoroughly.
IAS Notes Preparation
UPSC topper 2020 Jatin Kishore said that he does not prepare the notes for the IAS exam. He underlines the important topics in the books itself and does a multiple revision of the same.
But he suggested that the handy notes can be very helpful at the time of revision because at the times of IAS main exam, there are plenty of things to revise and it will be very difficult to revise with the books. Though he wrote the short notes from the newspaper but he did not prepare the structured notes from the standard reference books.
At the time of IAS main exam, the UPSC topper himself felt the importance of notes for the revision purpose and for this, he borrowed the notes from his friends and revised them till he felt comfortable with them. So he suggests notes is an integral part of the IAS preparation and revision.
Repeated Revision
Repeated Revision is the mantra of IAS topper Jatin Kishore. He suggested that the candidates should do multiple revisions of a single book instead of reading multiple books for one time. He strongly believes in revision and suggests the same for the future IAS aspirants. He said doing revision will make the candidate more oriented towards the solution of the fundamental problem.
He suggested revising each book four times as he does.
IAS main answer writing strategy
UPSC Topper 2020 Jatin Kishore emphasized the answer writing practice for the IAS main exam. He suggested that IAS aspirants should not start the IAS answer writing from day one of IAS preparation. He recommended that the candidates should study the basic general studies topics first so they have content for the answer writing and add it up with the current affairs happenings.
For IAS mains, he suggested that the candidates should not criticise the government policies, instead, they do constructive criticism and suggest the solutions for the problems. The candidates should adopt a balanced approach for the IAS Main answer writing.
IAS Essay Strategy
UPSC topper suggested that the Essay paper is the shortest paper in the IAS main exam if we consider the length in terms of the number of words. The candidates need to write two essays of around twelve hundred words. The IAS topper suggested giving fifteen to twenty-five minutes for the planning and structuring the essay.
The IAS topper highlighted that in the IAS essay paper, the candidates should try to cover all the aspects of the topic. He suggested that the candidates should be ready with ten to twelve themes/ideas to present them in distinct paragraphs. It is like writing different general studies answers.

He said that the IAS essay paper is the combination of general studies and general studies preparation helps a lot in the IAS essay writing.
IAS Ethics Strategy
UPSC topper suggested that IAS ethics paper is a difficult paper because the questions are based on the case studies. He suggested that the candidates should stick to the IAS ethics Syllabus. He suggested that the IAS aspirants should start preparing the basic concepts and learn the short definitions of each term.
After doing so, learn and try to incorporate the quoted from famous personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi in your answers. This will immensely help in fetching more marks in the IAS Ethics paper.
