The GEAC also recommended the conduct of field demonstration studies with respect to the effect of transgenic hybrid mustard DMH-11 on honey bees and other pollinating insects
- What is hybrid mustard?
- Hybridisation involves crossing two genetically dissimilar plant varieties. These plant varieties can be from the same species as well
- Hybrid mustard DMH-11 contains two alien genes isolated from a soil bacterium called Bacillus amyloliquefaciens
- First gene (barnase) codes for a protein that impairs pollen production. The plant into which it is incorporated becomes male-sterile. This plant is crossed with a fertile parental line, which contains second barstar gene that blocks the action of the barnase gene. The gives us a F1 progeny that is both high-yielding and also capable of producing seed/ grain
- What were the concerns about GM mustard?
- presence of a third bar gene makes GM mustard plants tolerant to the spraying of glufosinate ammonium, a chemical used for killing weeds. This will lead to displacement of manual labour engaged in weeding by promoting use of chemical herbicides
- The second concern is over GM mustard threatening or undermining the population of honey bees
Basmati Rice
