UGC NET Subject List 2024: The National Testing Agency (NTA) recently added 'Ayurveda Biology' as an additional subject in the UGC NET exam from December 2024 onwards to the existing list of subjects of UGC NET. There are 85 subjects for UGC NET in the December session, but in the June session the exam was conducted for 83 subjects. The UGC NET 2024 December exam dates are January 3 to January 16, 2025.

It is to be noted that while filling out the UGC NET 2024 application form for the December session, candidates need to enter their preferences for the desired subject. Candidates need to select the UGC NET subject in which they have done their postgraduation. Along with the UGC NET subject list, candidates must go through the exam pattern and syllabus to know the structure of the exam as well as the important topics and sections.

Q:   What is the UGC NET syllabus for 2024?

The UGC NET syllabus is divided into two sections that is Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 is common for all the candidates for any subject whereas the Paper 2 exam is subject specific which comprises the questions from the subject that the candidates opt to appear for the exam. Q:   What is the scope after qualifying UGC NET?

A:

The UGC NET exam is taken for the candidates who are interested in PhD research and teaching as Assistant professor in colleges and univeristies of India. However, there are other career opportunities other than being Assisatnt Professor or a Research Scholar. The candidates who qualified for the UGC NET exam can apploy for the PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) such as Indian Oil Corporlation limited (IOCL), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC), Oil and Natural Gas Corportaion (ONGC), etc. 

The candidates who do not want to join any PSU can take up other options like online tutor, open their own coaching centres, guest faculty, consultant, Lab Trainer, IP lead, Author, Editor, Transmission Executive, Program Executive, etc.

How to Choose UGC NET Subject?

Candidates need to choose the UGC NET subject as per their area of specialisation in their post-graduation degree course while submitting their online applications. If a candidate’s post-graduation subject is not mentioned in the subject list prescribed by UGC, he or she can choose a related subject. As per the official UGC NET notification , “Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their post-graduation only. The candidates, whose post-graduation subject is not covered in the list of NET subjects, may appear in a related subject.

Q:   When will the UGC NET new syllabus be introduced?

A:

The University Grants Commission (UGC) announced that the UGC NET syllabus will be revised according to the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). However, chaiman did not announced any specific ime related to the updation of UGC NET syllabus. The candidates can expect the change in the UGC NET syllabus by the end of 2024 or in the beginning of 2025. 

Q:   Who prescribes the UGC NET syllabus?

A:
The University Grants Commission (UGC) prescribes the UGC NET syllabus for all papers and subjects. Any change made in the syllabus is announced by the UGC on its official website. The announcement is made through the notification that is released in the PDF format. The notification will be released for the specific subject whose syllabus is changed. The notification will contain all the information that is added or renewed like which subject syllabus has been changed, what are the topics that has been added and more. Recently, the Cultural Studies has been added to the English syllabus for the UGC NET exam.

A:
UGC NET syllabus for English comprises the following topics: Paper 1 Syllabus Teaching Aptitude Research Aptitude Communication Higher education Mathematical Reasoning Logical Reasoning Data Interpretation Reading Comprehension People and Environment Information & Communication Technology Paper 2 English . Syllabus Drama Poetry Fiction, short story Non-Fictional Prose Language:Basics concepts, theories and pedagogy English in India: History, Evolution and Futures Cultural Studies Literary Criticism Literary Theory post world war II Research Methods and Materials in English.
  • Candidates with a Master’s Degree in Geography (with specialization in Population Studies) or Mathematics/ Statistics are eligible to appear in the subject 'Population Studies' (Code 15).
  • Candidates with a Master’s Degree in Humanities (including languages) and Social Sciences are eligible to appear in the subject 'Women Studies' (Code 74)

It may be noted that the NTA UGC NET subject chosen once by the candidate will not be changed later under any circumstances. Therefore, candidates are advised to choose their UGC NET subject wisely at the time of filling out the application form.    

Important Points Related to UGC NET Exam

The candidates who are going to appear for the UGC NET exam must know the exam inside out. The points that have been given below will help the applicants to understand the UGC NET exam clearly:

  • UGC NET exam comprises two papers i.e. Paper 1 and Paper 2
  • The exam is conducted in two languages i.e. English and Hindi
  • The time duration of the UGC NET exam is 3 hours 
  • The total number of questions in the UGC NET exam is 150 for a total of 300 marks
  • All questions will be MCQ in nature and every question will have four options 
  • For each correct answer, candidates will be awarded 2 marks 
  • No marks will be deducted for incorrect answers as there is no negative marking 
  • No marks will be awarded or deducted for questions left unanswered or blank 
  • If any question is dropped by UGC then maximum marks will be awarded to the candidates for the dropped question
  • If a question is found to be incorrect/ambiguous or has multiple correct answers, only those candidates who have attempted the question and chosen one of the correct answers would be given the credit
  •  If a question is found to be incorrect and the Question is dropped, then two marks will be awarded to only those candidates who have attempted the question. The reason could be due to human error or technical error. Since, there is no negative marking, candidate needs to choose one most appropriate option as correct answer
