Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   Which college is better for B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering: IIT Delhi or IIT Bombay?

A:

The course outline of mechanical in IIT Delhi or IIT Bombay is similar and is quite well aligned with the course structure of top ranked international universities and the mechanical is one of the most desired and demanded branches in the IITs. The universities stand on similar QS ranking level and the facility and quality of infrastructure on average is almost the same in both the campuses, IITB has a lake, a pretty larger campus than that of IITD whereas IITD stands in a very desired location of Delhi ( in Hauz Khas) which stands very close to the international airport and various railway stations and is comparatively very green and clean than the outer Delhi. The trends of placement or students going for further studies differ very less and if you are really relying on placements to be a deciding factor, you'll still be in doubt. If we look at the opening and closing ranks of the department in both the colleges, the mechanical in IITB opens before it starts at IITD and also closes some numbers before, but the range is quite same. Many people choose IITB for its past trend or some local variables and similarly people also choose IITD if they aspire to go for civil services as Delhi is the hub for the preparation for UPSC and other civil services and again the accessibility of the nearby regions. I'd say both of the campus stand on the same level if the department is considered, the selection is totally depend on the individual depending on the local variables that affects him/her.

Q:   Can I get IIT Delhi with 500 rank?

A:

Yes, you can get into IIT Delhi with 500 rank. As per the IIT Delhi Cutoff 2024, the last round closing ranks ranged between 116 and 6102 for the General AI category students. There are a few courses available at 500 rank including BTech in CSE and BTech in Mathematics and Computer Engineering.

The table provided below mentions the courses available at rank 500, for the General All India category candidates:

Course2024
B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering116
Integrated B.Tech. + M.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering204
Integrated B.Tech. + M.Tech. in Mathematics and Computing417
B.Tech. in Mathematics and Computing Engineering332

Q:   How long is BTech in IIT Delhi?

A:

The duration of IIT Delhi BTech courses is four years. The full-time degree programme is divided into eight semesters. During the BTech course duration, the students have to do compulsory foundation courses in the areas of basic sciences, humanities, engineering sciences, and social sciences along with the departmental core and elective courses. Moreover, IIT Delhi offers internship opportunities to UG students, the duration of short-term internships is 1.5 to 2 months and is 6 months for long-term internships.

Apart from this, the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi also offer an integrated BTech and MTech programme. The duration of this dual degree course is five years against the standard duration of both the courses - BTech (four years) and MTech (two years).

Q:   Between IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, which has better hostel facilities and amenities for BTech students?

A:
Based on ratings and reviews from current and former students, IIT Delhi is considered to have better hostel facilities and amenities compared to IIT Bombay. The hostels at IIT Delhi are known for their cleanliness, spacious rooms, and well-maintained common areas. The campus also has various sports facilities, gymnasiums, and recreation rooms, which are highly appreciated by the students. In comparison, while the hostels at IIT Bombay are also considered to be of good quality, they are often criticized for being too congested and having inadequate facilities. However, the campus does have a good range of amenities including a sports complex, swimming pool, and student activity center.

Q:   How are the BTech placements at IIT Delhi?

I am really satisfied by my college as it provides me with all the facilities that I need.
Placements: Still, the placement for the year 2024 is going on at IIT Delhi, but till now, as of now, many students have been offered various jobs at IIT Delhi. Which type of job you get totally depends on your CGPA at IIT Delhi. For any branch, your CGPA must be above 7, or else you won't be allowed to sit in an interview. Till now it has not been unannounced about the highest and the lowest package of the year 2024, but in 2023 it was 2 crore for international and 1.2 crore for domestic. Top recruiting companies are Ola Electric, Microsoft, Air India, Bajaj Auto, etc. Very few students get internship opportunities at IIT Delhi, as we require a much better CGPA for internships.
Infrastructure: I have cut one star because of the infrastructure of the hostel. The hostels at IIT Delhi are much older, and not many facilities are provided in the hostel. But when it comes to labs and lecture halls, then we feel like we have come to study in a foreign college. The labs are much more advanced than expected.
Faculty: Yes, the teachers are very helpful at IIT Delhi. They will welcome you for personal doubts, and they also teach us very nicely. Once a week, tutorial classes are organized in which we can solve different questions, and our doubts are being cleared. The semester exams are much more difficult at IIT Delhi. In our 1st year, we have a course, APL-100, which is the course code for the physics subject, and in that subject, the final exam was worth 150 marks, and the average marks of the final exam were just 30.
Other: I choose this course because I just wanted to go to IIT Delhi because of its startup culture and various fests. I feel that in our course, which is mechanical engineering, the grading system must be done easily so that students get a good CGPA. The fests at IIT Delhi are much more exciting, and along with it, tight security is also seen at IIT Delhi. Also, we get huge scholarship opportunities at IIT Delhi from alumni. Also, we have a high quality of playgrounds at IIT Delhi, so people who are interested in playing sports find it like a heaven for them.

IIT Delhi: undoubtably a dream college.
Placements: 100 percent placements are offered in my course, and the highest package is 2.2 crores; the lowest is 12 LPA. 60% of people got internships in my branch. SDE, ML, consulting, and core roles were there. Top companies offering jobs are Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Adobe, LinkedIn, Meesho, and many more.
Infrastructure: Wi-Fi is 24/7 available at high speed. Classrooms are AC-contained, and projectors are available in classes. IIT contains more than 50 labs for undergrad students. The quality of food isn't that good in some hostels like mine. It's just luck by chance. If you got a good hostel, then you'll get good food; otherwise, there will be bad food.
Faculty: Faculty members are highly educated and really helpful if you seek help from them. Teaching quality is really good in my branch. Most of the professors are good teachers too. Semester exams in college are quite difficult to crack. You've got to ace your numerical solving skills really well to polish your grades.

Good college based on good infrastructure and brand name.
Placements: During the first year, students are not placed. There are many for recruiting companies for mechanical department like Tata group, Mahindra Group, etc. Roles are different in different field of companies for example, design, production, marketing, sales management, consulting engineering, etc. The highest package offered was 40 LPA, and the minimum was 8 LPA. Right now, in my first year, there are no internships.
Infrastructure: There are very good facilities available, like 24/7 Wi-Fi, which is limited but enough if you want to do anything. Labs are pretty much clean and machines are also the newest. Classrooms are also very neat and clean. They are fully air-conditioned and a good environment is present in the classroom. Some classrooms are small, big and then the biggest.
Faculty: Yes, teachers are well qualified and very helpful. If you have any doubts, you are free to ask. If you want to do a project, that can also be done with the professors during long holidays. The teaching quality is extremely good. These things are pretty much good for students and make them industry-ready. Semester exams are not that difficult; if one studies a bit, you might get good marks. The pass percentage is around 95%.
Other: Based on my interest, I pursued this course. The best thing is that they provide you with interactive sessions online and offline. This course is already good but students must be encouraged to learn, as most of them want to go into the IT sector. There are many fests continuously occurring in college that are pretty good to take part in, like technical and cultural fests.

Happy college life at IIT Delhi.
Placements: All students were placed with whoever suited for the placement this year, and last year around 33 students were suited for placement, and all of them got placed eventually. The highest package was in a Quant company of 1.2 crore in Hong Kong, the lowest was in a core company of about 12 lacs, and the average package is about 25 lacs. Amazon, Flipkart, Air India, and Microsoft were the top recruiting companies for my course. Around 28 students got internships out of 34 students in companies like HUL, Finmechanics, Amazon, and Microsoft. Roles like SDE, product manager, site engineer, and senior consultant were offered.
Infrastructure: Our department has its own labs; for example, we have solid labs, fluid labs, and special labs like soft robotics and scholar rooms, continuing all the major facilities that can be found all over the world. We also have our own library, and the classrooms are not there, but we have our department building in which most of the professors have their own separate offices. Our hostel mess is very nice; we have a weekly menu. We also have regular special dinners, and the quality of food is very good, and also the mess is very clean, and they take care of hygiene.
Faculty: The teachers are very helpful as they are highly educated, so they deliver quality content. All the faculty members are easy to reach out to, and they are always willing to help the students. Yes, the course curriculum is formed after a lot of interactions. We have a basic foundation course till our 2nd year, and then we have an industrial importance course in our 3rd and 4th years. The academics of IIT Delhi are relatively tougher than those of other IITs or any other engineering college, but this also makes the students ready for the other challenges.
Other: I choose this course because of my interest in core mechanical engineering and also my interest in robotics. If we can rearrange the duration of some of the courses, like if we can have the machine learning course in the 4th semester rather than the 6th semester, it will help us more in internships and placements. We have 2 yearly fests: RDV and our technical fest. TRYST has many stalls and events around the corners in these fests, and the main highlight is the pro night and live stages.

Satisfaction of hostel facilities.
Placements: The highest and the lowest package in mechanical engineering at IIT Delhi is INR 2.4 CPA and INR 10 Lacs. The average package in the department is INR 20 Lacs. Overall, around 87% of the students were placed last year. The placement overall is very good.
Infrastructure: The facilities available for the course/department are quite satisfactory. On the contrary, the facilities provided at the hostel are not. I stay at Himadri hostel, and there is no facility of a gym, very less spacious visitor room, and low-quality food is provided.
Faculty: Yes, the teachers are helpful and knowledgeable, and you can reach out to them at any hour through various means. The semester exams are relatively tough according to what is taught in lectures. Most of the professors are friendly, but some of them are not.

Hi Pranav, SAT is not required for Indian applicants, so there is no need to stress over it. If you do take a score of 1450 is good. Check the application requirements on the websites. For Indian applicants JEE is the requirement.

No, it is not possible. IITs in no case provides lateral admission to anyone, not even accepts a college transfer from any institute even if it is an IIT. The only means you can get admitted into B.Tech programme of IIT is by appearing in JEE Mains followed by JEE Advanced.

The admission in any of the IITs is strictly based on the rank secured in JEE advanced examination. If your rank is good, then you can get mechanical engineering at IIT Delhi. If you have not given the JEE Mains and Advanced then you cannot get admission.
