Silk Technology is stream or sub-discipline of textile engineering which is related to the silk manufacturing technology. It is a major area of specialisation under textile engineering owing to the booming silk industry in India. After the Government of India provided impetus to the silk and other textile industries in India by creation of Central Silk Board in the year 1948, this course has its own importance. Silk Sector provides multiple job opportunities in the field of research, development, industrial production and rearing of silk in silk farms.

This course is either offered as a stand-alone program as B.Tech in silk Technology or as a specialisation in the third and fourth year of B.Tech in Textile Management. It is also offered as a specialisation course in postgraduate program. Candidates learn the various methods of silk rearing, fabric formation, textile management, polymer science and creation and production of nano-fibres and advanced fibres.

Candidates who have completed this course can find themselves working for top textile companies or silk rearing industries and farms. They can work as Mill Managers, Designers, Academicians and Research Associates across industries and research boards.
