Surface Mining Technology

Surface mining is the process of extracting rock or minerals from the surface of the earth. Surface mining begins with the removal of surface debris, overburden, and other materials that lie above the mineral deposit, to expose the ore body.

This subject covers the study of stress, strain, stress-strain relationships, elasticity and plasticity. Introduction to Geology

This coursework is designed to give students an introduction to geology and geostatistics. The relationship between the two disciplines is explained, along with the importance of earth's history in understanding present-day processes. The module will include an overview of the geological time scale and how it is used to understand Earth's history; how scientists work with data (and why it is important) through a study of statistics; and finally an introduction to some common rocks and minerals (e.g., quartz, feldspar).

Mine Exploration

The process of gathering and analysing information about potential mineral deposits, including surface and subsurface data, to determine if a prospect is likely to contain economically viable quantities of minerals.

Applied Thermodynamics

 It involves finding out how to apply principles from physics to design energy systems, including internal combustion engines, heat engines, refrigeration systems, and solar power plants. Applied thermodynamics also deals with industrial processes and transportation systems such as steam turbines and internal combustion engines.

Mine Surveying

The primary purpose of mine surveying is to provide information on the layout of underground workings, structural geology, ore reserves, mineralogy, and subsidence. It can also be used to evaluate the effects of mining on water supplies and drainage systems.

Rock Mechanics and Ground Control

The coursework will include rock mass classifications based on joint properties and discontinuities - foliation joints, corner joints/joint sets, shear zones/shearing joints/joint sets (including open fractures), bedding planes/joint sets/unconformities (including open fractures).

Mineral Processing Technology

Mineral processing includes the extraction of minerals from their ores and the preparation of these for use in products. The extraction process may involve physical or chemical methods, or both.

Underground Coal and Metal Mining Technology

The syllabus of Underground Coal and Metal Mining Technology includes all the important aspects of underground mining. This course is a combination of theoretical and practical knowledge. It includes different topics like coal mining, mineral processing, underground hazards, geology, mineral resources and other related topics.

Mine Ventilation

The subject includes the study of methods of detecting explosive concentrations in air by flame ionisation detectors. Flame ionisation detectors are used to measure explosive concentrations in mines where firedamp is present. They are also used in conjunction with other equipment which detects gases such as methane or carbon monoxide.
