Eligibility criteria for Aerospace Engineering

Someone aspiring to be an aerospace engineer should meet the minimum eligibility criteria given below to pursue the course:

  • One should be a student of the science stream and have passed their higher secondary, which is class 12, with a minimum of 45% marks in the general category (40% marks for SC/ST category). The eligibility scores required differ across universities.

  • Aerospace Engineering is, essentially, offered at the postgraduate level.

  • Alternatively, possessing a 3 to a 4-year degree in a technical diploma or engineering allows one to pursue Aerospace Engineering. A five-year degree holder in architecture is also eligible to pursue Aerospace Engineering. Postgraduates in Mathematics, Sciences, Computer Applications or Statistics can opt for Aerospace Engineering.

  • For getting access to any research program at a postgraduate or doctoral level in Aerospace Engineering, one needs to have a decent GATE score.

  • To be selected as an aerospace aspirant in the National Aeronautics And Space Administration (NASA) in the United States, one should possess degrees in a variety of disciplines, including degrees in biomedical engineering, chemistry, industrial engineering, metallurgy, optical engineering, oceanography, ceramic engineering, materials engineering or metallurgy etc. It should also be considered that NASA usually gives preference to PhD holders. So, having a post-doctorate degree gives one an edge over other applicants.

Syllabus-Important Facts for Aerospace Engineering

B. Tech in Aerospace Engineering is another specialised field of engineering which involves the science and engineering of aircraft and other spacecraft. These include space shuttles, aeroplanes and other flying vehicles operating within the earth's atmosphere.

Students are required to explore the different domains in the field to gain practical knowledge of spaceflights. The syllabus endeavours to teach students about the workings of flying objects and how something flies in Earth's atmosphere. The duration of the course is 4-5 years which includes 8 semesters. The difference in the syllabus (IITs v/s NITs)

Generally, the syllabus is similar. However, as different institutions function differently; so the way of teaching the syllabus is different. Aerodynamics

This studies how gases interact with moving bodies and exert forces on them. The gas encountered on the Earth's surface is air.

Aerodynamics deals with the forces of drag and lift that is usually caused by the air passing over and around the solid bodies. Aerodynamics is also considerably different from gas dynamics as it only concerns itself with the behaviour of air in Earth's atmosphere, while gas dynamics concerns itself with the behavioural study of many gases.

Thermodynamics and Propulsion

This deals with the effect of work, heat and energy on a system. It can also be said that thermodynamics concerns itself with the observations of large-scale systems that deal with the macroscopic world. Propulsion is when students study ways to design aircraft that can generate thrust and help the vehicle fly through the air. Hence, propulsion concerns itself with the study of basic operation and design of propulsion vehicles in aerospace.

This is the study of the way flying objects generate thrust to fly.

Aircraft Design and Propulsion

This deals with finding out about the challenges experienced in the design of an airframe and the integration of the propulsion system with the airframe.

Aerospace Structural Mechanics

This is the study of how the mechanical behaviour of matter is used in building an aircraft. It helps determine how a flight makes use of composite materials to fulfil multifunctional needs.

Spaceflight Mechanics

These are fundamentally the principles used to ensure the proper development of a spacecraft.

Incompressible Fluid Mechanics

This deals with the study of fluids that stay in motion. These fluids are special because they move with constant density. Hence, the material density is always constant within the fluid parcel being studied within incompressible fluid mechanics.
