Production Engineering is a branch of Mechanical Engineering that deals with the different aspects of production and quality control. Several diploma, undergraduate (UG), post-graduate (PG), and PhD programmes are available in Production Engineering. However, most colleges in India only offer UG and PG courses. The syllabus of these courses mainly deals with the principles of the manufacturing process and how different concepts of Science, Maths, Physics, and Chemistry are related to it. The students can work in research labs, manufacturing industries, sports, health, medicine and various other sectors after completing a course in Production Engineering.

Production Engineering Syllabus: Important Facts

Check some important facts related to Production Engineering below:

  • Course duration: UG programmes in Production Engineering are usually for four years, whereas PG programmes are usually two-year programmes.
  • Eligibility criteria: The students who wish to apply for the BTech courses need to complete their 10+2 studies with a minimum of 60% marks in subjects like Maths, Chemistry and Physics. Many colleges also offer admission based on the scores obtained by the students in the entrance exams. The students who have completed BTech can apply for ME and MTech degrees with a minimum of 50% marks.
  • Difference in syllabus in IIT and MIT: Both IITs and MIT offer Production Engineering courses with an advanced syllabus. Though there might be slight differences in the curriculum, the focus areas remain the same, like developing an understanding of supply chain processes, process control, etc., in the students.
  • Scope in India: The students who have completed a degree course in Production Engineering can work as process managers, production managers, production engineering, etc. This opens a wide horizon of opportunities, in terms of career and jobs, in the manufacturing sector for the students who have completed the Production Engineering course.
  • Exam pattern: The Production Engineering exams consist of practical and theory papers. The students have to pass both exams to clear the semester-wise exams.
  • Changes in the syllabus: The syllabus for the Production Engineering courses has remained the same. However, the syllabus has been slightly revised to accommodate these new concepts with the introduction of automation and other new techniques.
